Sri Lanka has launched Starlink, Elon Musk’s satellite broadband service from SpaceX, and the country has made a significant leap in the digital space. Starlink is available across the country as of July 2, 2025. According to the official coverage map, the entire island is lit up in blue, indicating service availability.
Why It Matters to Sri Lanka
Starlinkโs low Earth orbit satellites deliver high-speed, low-latency internet service, particularly suitable for rural, remote and disaster-prone regions where traditional networks cannot provide services. With the rollout now largely complete, Sri Lankans all over the islandโtea estates, rural villages and coastal enclaves alike can expect reliable connectivity.
Launch Timeline and Regulation Sri Lanka granted a preliminary licence in August 2024 when updates were incorporated in its telecommunications law. A pilot to test 10 Starlink units to confirm the viability of the service was conducted before todayโs launch.

- Fuels economic opportunity, facilitating remote work, education, and entrepreneurship
- Greatly enhances communications in disaster situations
Sri Lanka’s Starlink launch marks the start of a new chapter in broadband access for communities and development. While India remains in a holding pattern awaiting licensing before it can roll out Starlink service, today’s launch is a milestone moment for South Asia
