Sri Lanka has launched Starlink, Elon Musk’s satellite broadband service from SpaceX, and the country has made a significant leap in the digital space. Starlink is available across the country as of July 2, 2025. According to the official coverage map, the entire island is lit up in blue, indicating service availability.
Why It Matters to Sri Lanka
Starlink’s low Earth orbit satellites deliver high-speed, low-latency internet service, particularly suitable for rural, remote and disaster-prone regions where traditional networks cannot provide services. With the rollout now largely complete, Sri Lankans all over the island—tea estates, rural villages and coastal enclaves alike can expect reliable connectivity.
Launch Timeline and Regulation Sri Lanka granted a preliminary licence in August 2024 when updates were incorporated in its telecommunications law. A pilot to test 10 Starlink units to confirm the viability of the service was conducted before today’s launch.
