India’s AI Skills Race Could Make Degrees Less Valuable Unless Colleges Change Faster

A college degree is not disappearing from India’s job market, but it is losing some power as a stand-alone hiring signal. Employers increasingly want proof of what graduates can build and apply as AI spreads across industries.

The World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2025 found that 30% of employers operating in India see skills-based hiring that removes degree requirements as effective, compared with 19% globally. Aon’s latest campus study also says employers remain interested in graduates but are becoming more selective about specialised skills and job readiness.

Key Highlights

  • WEF says 30% of India-based employers see removing degree requirements through skills-based hiring as effective.
  • Mercer found 42.6% of Indian graduates applying for jobs were overall employable in its 2025 Graduate Skill Index.
  • The Centre is pushing AI curriculum reform, AI labs, certifications and industry-linked training.

Why A Degree Alone Is Losing Some Hiring Power

Degrees still provide academic depth and remain essential in many professions. Trouble starts when the qualification itself is treated as proof that a graduate is workplace-ready.

The Mercer India Graduate Skill Index 2025, based on more than 1 million students across 2,700-plus campuses, put overall employability at 42.6%. Job readiness for AI and machine-learning roles stood at 46.1%.

Aon’s 2026-27 campus study, covering more than 220 organisations, found 51% planned to increase intern hiring and 36% expected to hire more engineers. Around 90% hire interns, while 80% to 85% use pre-placement interviews or offers to convert strong interns into full-time hires.

That shifts attention towards proof of performance:

  • A degree can open the first door.
  • An internship, portfolio or project shows what a candidate can do.
  • AI fluency increasingly sits beside communication, judgement and domain knowledge.

Colleges Are Racing To Close The AI Curriculum Gap

The government has already acknowledged that classroom programmes need updating. In May 2026, an AI Curriculum Taskforce review of BTech Computer Science and allied courses found gaps despite wider AI coverage. The proposed direction included practical exposure, industry-integrated learning, faculty development and shared infrastructure.

An August government update said more than 34 lakh candidates had registered on FutureSkills PRIME and over 13 lakh had been certified. Another official update reported 5,17,477 enrolments and 1,00,664 certifications under the SOAR AI-readiness programme by 6 August 2026.

IndiaAI is also promoting Data and AI Labs for Tier-2 and Tier-3 locations. Its official IndiaAI X post on FutureSkills and Data & AI Labs highlighted government-endorsed training in data annotation, data curation, AI technology and data science.

What Colleges Would Need To Change First

Adding “AI” to a subject list is not enough.

  • Projects can use current tools, datasets and industry-style problems instead of ending with written examinations alone.
  • Faculty training needs to move with curriculum updates because fast-changing tools can date static material quickly.
  • Internships, apprenticeships and assessed portfolios can carry more academic weight where rules permit.
  • Non-technical degrees need AI literacy too as automation enters marketing, HR, finance and research.

Students Are Already Building A Second Layer Beyond Their Degrees

Students are not waiting for every university to catch up. An Economic Times report published on 4 October 2026 said college learners are increasingly pairing degrees with online AI and job-focused courses as they prepare for changing entry-level roles.

LinkedIn’s Grads’ Guide 2026 listed AI Specialist and Generative AI Engineer among the fastest-growing job titles for Indian career starters. That does not mean every student needs an AI career. It shows employers are creating roles around capabilities that may not fit neatly inside an older degree label.

A stronger profile links formal study with evidence: a working project, research contribution, internship outcome, GitHub repository or domain-specific AI workflow.

What Happens To The Value Of An Indian Degree Next?

Degrees are unlikely to become irrelevant. Their value may increasingly depend on what sits inside them.

India’s policy response is moving towards AI labs, short credentials, apprenticeships and industry-aligned curricula. Colleges now face a tougher test: can they bring that speed into three- and four-year programmes without reducing education to narrow tool training?

The aim is a graduate who can use AI without outsourcing judgement to it, while retaining technical ability, critical thinking and communication.

FAQs

Will AI make college degrees useless in India?
No. Degrees will remain important, but employers may give greater weight to demonstrated skills, internships, portfolios and job readiness alongside formal academic qualifications.

Which AI skills are most useful for Indian students?
Useful skills vary by field, but AI literacy, data handling, prompting, automation, critical evaluation and applying tools to domain problems are becoming valuable.

Are Indian employers really removing degree requirements?
Some are moving that way. WEF data shows 30% of India-based employers see skills-based hiring that removes degree requirements as an effective strategy.

What should colleges change first for AI-era hiring?
Colleges can update projects, strengthen faculty training, add industry exposure and assess applied work more seriously instead of relying mainly on theory-heavy examinations.

Should students take AI certificates outside college?
Certificates can help when they build usable skills. Students should prefer credible courses and pair them with projects or work samples employers can actually evaluate.
