How to Check PUC Certificate Status Online and Download Your Vehicle’s Pollution Certificate in India

Has your vehicle’s PUC slip gone missing just when you need to check its expiry date? Vehicle owners no longer need to return to the pollution testing centre simply to verify the certificate. The government’s Parivahan PUC system lets a driver check the latest Pollution Under Control Certificate online using the registration number and part of the chassis number.

A valid PUC certificate records that the vehicle passed the prescribed emission test when issued. It also carries the testing date, validity period, emission readings and authorised PUC centre details. The online record is useful when the printed copy is lost or damaged.

Key Highlights

  • Vehicle owners can check the PUC record through the official Parivahan portal using the registration number, last five chassis characters and captcha.
  • The displayed certificate can be saved or printed for later use when the record is available online.
  • From 1 October 2026, CAQM’s Direction No. 101 restricts fuelling in NCR for vehicles without a valid PUCC.

What a PUC Certificate Shows and Why It Is Required

A Pollution Under Control Certificate, commonly called PUC or PUCC, records the result of an emission test at an authorised centre. Depending on the vehicle and fuel type, it may display readings for carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, smoke density and other applicable parameters.

Under the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, vehicles are required to carry a valid PUC certificate after the applicable initial period. The certificate remains valid across India while it is in force. MoRTH also introduced a common, IT-enabled PUCC format, which the ministry highlighted through its official X post on the common PUC format in 2021.

The online certificate is not a fresh pollution test. It is the digital record of the latest test already completed for the vehicle. If the validity date has passed, downloading the old certificate does not renew it.

How to Check PUC Certificate Status Online and Download It

The quickest route is the official Parivahan PUC certificate page. Keep the registration certificate nearby because the portal asks for chassis information.

Open the Parivahan PUC page and select “PUC Certificate.” Enter the vehicle registration number exactly as shown on the RC. Next, type the last five characters of the chassis number, fill in the security code and choose “PUC Details.” These are the fields currently shown on the government portal.

If a record is available, the screen can show the PUCC number, issue date, validity date, registration details, fuel type, emission norm, PUC centre information and measured emission values. Parivahan services also allow motorists to keep track of PUCC validity through the national vehicle database.

To keep a copy, open the certificate view and use the available print control. If the page does not provide a separate PDF button, open the browser’s print menu and select Save as PDF. The saved copy can then be kept on a phone or printed whenever required.

What to Do If the PUC Is Expired, Missing or Incorrect

An expired PUC cannot be renewed by changing details online. The vehicle has to undergo another emission test at an authorised Pollution Checking Centre. The government’s mParivahan service also supports finding PUC centres and checking PUCC validity.

If no certificate appears even though the vehicle was recently tested, recheck the registration number and last five chassis characters. If the record still does not appear, contact the testing centre or the relevant State Transport Department because the certificate data comes from the authorised testing process.

Owners should also compare the registration number, fuel type and vehicle details shown online with the RC. A mismatch is better raised early rather than discovered during enforcement.

Why PUC Status Is Especially Important in 2026

PUC compliance has become more visible as authorities expand technology-led vehicle emission checks. In Delhi-NCR, the Commission for Air Quality Management reviewed Direction No. 101, which restricts fuelling vehicles without a valid PUCC across NCR from 1 October 2026. A June 2026 PIB update also referred to ANPR cameras at fuel and CNG stations in Delhi and NCR areas of Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Rajasthan.

The testing process is also becoming more closely documented. Delhi’s Transport Department listed a 22 January 2026 circular on uploading video clips during vehicle emission testing on PUCC software version 2.0, another sign that pollution checks are moving toward stronger digital verification.

For drivers, the practical takeaway is simple: check the expiry date before a long trip, a pollution-season enforcement drive or a visit to NCR. The online status check takes only a few details and can prevent a last-minute search for a paper certificate.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Can a PUC certificate be checked using only the vehicle number?

No. The Parivahan portal also requires the last five chassis characters and captcha. These details help verify the correct vehicle record before displaying the PUC certificate.

2. Can an expired PUC certificate be downloaded online?

An older PUC record may still appear online and can sometimes be viewed or saved. However, downloading it does not renew the certificate or extend its validity period.

3. Where can a vehicle owner renew a PUC certificate?

Vehicle owners must visit an authorised Pollution Checking Centre for a fresh emission test. Once the vehicle passes, a new PUC certificate is issued with updated validity details.

4. Is the online PUC certificate valid outside the issuing state?

Yes. A valid PUC certificate issued under applicable rules is recognised across India. It remains acceptable outside the issuing state as long as the certificate is still valid.

5. What if the PUC details do not appear on Parivahan?

Recheck the registration number and chassis details entered on the Parivahan portal first. If nothing appears, contact the testing centre or State Transport Department for correction.
