For many Class 10 pass candidates, MTS is one of the first Central Government job categories they encounter. MTS means Multi-Tasking Staff. These employees work across ministries, departments and subordinate offices, with duties changing by section and posting. SSC classifies MTS as a General Central Service Group C, non-gazetted, non-ministerial post.
The Staff Selection Commission recruits MTS for Central Government offices. In 2026, SSC still lists the Multi Tasking (Non-Technical) Staff Examination in its examination calendar, so current applicants should rely on SSC notices rather than third-party dates.
Key Highlights
- MTS is a Group C, non-gazetted, non-ministerial Central Government post.
- SSC MTS uses Matriculation, or Class 10/equivalent, as the entry qualification.
- MTS is placed in Pay Level 1, currently ₹18,000 to ₹56,900 under the 7th CPC.
- Duties vary by office and include records, file movement, dispatch and routine support.
- Promotion depends on departmental rules, vacancies and qualifying routes.
What Does an MTS Employee Actually Do in a Government Office?
A recruit may move files between sections, assist with records, photocopy papers or help with dispatch. In some offices, upkeep, opening and closing rooms, delivery of official dak or other non-clerical work also falls within the role.
An official government recruitment document lists physical maintenance of records, file carrying, photocopying, diary and despatch work among MTS duties. DoPT now describes the role more broadly around office maintenance, record-keeping and day-to-day government operations.
A newer rule affects recruits too. DoPT’s October 27, 2025 instructions introduced mandatory two-week induction training for MTS joining through SSC from the 2025 intake onwards. Successful completion is required for confirmation of probation. Read the DoPT MTS training instructions
Typical work may include:
- moving files and records inside the office;
- helping with dispatch, photocopying and routine office work;
- support duties assigned under departmental rules.
How Much Is MTS Salary in 2026?
The reliable figure is the official pay level, not a social-media “in-hand salary” estimate. MTS posts sit in Pay Level 1. Under the 7th Central Pay Commission matrix, basic pay runs from ₹18,000 to ₹56,900.
Take-home pay is different. Dearness Allowance, House Rent Allowance and Transport Allowance may be added, while NPS and other deductions reduce the amount credited each month. Posting city also changes the calculation.
The 8th Central Pay Commission is active in 2026, with its official website showing meetings continuing in October. As of October 5, the official site does not show a replacement Level 1 pay matrix, so unofficial fitment-factor calculations should not be treated as confirmed MTS salary. Who Is Eligible for MTS and How Does Selection Work?
Class 10 is the established SSC MTS qualification. In SSC’s latest confirmed MTS notice, most MTS posts carried an age band of 18 to 25 years, while Havaldar and a few MTS posts allowed candidates up to 27. Category-based relaxations apply under government rules.
The cut-off date is important. Someone inside the age band today may still be ineligible if the notice measures age on another date. Matriculation must also be completed by the prescribed date.
For the regular SSC route:
- MTS selection uses a computer-based examination.
- Havaldar candidates also undergo prescribed PET and PST.
- Vacancies and exact eligibility dates must come from the live SSC notice.
Can MTS Employees Get Promoted?
MTS is an entry-level post, but it need not be the final grade. DoPT’s annual report records an SSC Limited Departmental Competitive Examination for promotion from Multi-Tasking Staff to Lower Division Clerk.
There is no universal automatic promotion after a fixed number of years. The department’s recruitment rules, eligibility conditions, vacancies and examination requirements decide progression. After entry into the clerical cadre, separate departmental routes may open for later grades.
What Should Candidates Check Before Applying?
Use three documents: the SSC recruitment notice, vacancy list and the service conditions of the allotted department. The notice decides eligibility, the vacancy list shows available posts, and departmental rules shape duties and promotion.
For salary revisions, check the Department of Expenditure and the official 8th CPC website. For applications, exam dates and results, use SSC. This avoids relying on old age cut-offs, estimated pay or unverified vacancy figures.
