NEET UG is preparing for its biggest format change since the national medical entrance examination was introduced. From 2027, candidates will no longer fill circles on an OMR sheet. They will answer the paper on a computer at an authorised examination centre.
The National Testing Agency told the Supreme Court on May 29, 2026, that it was ready to conduct NEET UG in computer-based test mode from 2027. Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan later repeated that the pen-and-paper format would end. However, the detailed NEET 2027 information bulletin, exam dates, shift rules and scoring method have not yet been released.
The change arrives after another difficult examination cycle. NEET UG 2026 was cancelled and conducted again following a reported paper leak, while later disputes involved OMR records, altered scorecards and student protests. Moving the paper to secure computer terminals is meant to reduce printing, storage and transportation risks.
Why Is NEET 2027 Moving From OMR To CBT?
A printed examination paper passes through several stages before reaching a candidate. Questions must be printed, packed, transported, stored and opened at thousands of centres. Every additional stage creates another point where security can fail.
In a computer-based test, encrypted question papers can be delivered digitally to centres closer to the examination time. Candidate responses are also stored electronically, removing physical OMR scanning and reducing disputes linked to damaged sheets, faint markings or disputed bubbles.
The decision for NEET 2027 to move fully online was first placed formally before the Supreme Court and has since become part of the wider examination reform discussion. PTI’s official X update also reported the NTA’s submission. The move does not mean candidates can take NEET from home. It will remain a supervised entrance test at designated centres.
How Will The Computer-Based Medical Entrance Test Work?
NTA has not released the NEET 2027 screen design. Its existing computer-based examinations, however, show the likely process. Candidates should expect assigned terminals, identity verification, on-screen instructions, a countdown timer, and digital submission.
A question palette may show answered, unanswered and review-marked questions. Candidates can usually move between questions, select an option, change it before final submission and mark difficult questions for review. The final NEET 2027 instructions will decide whether every familiar CBT feature is retained.
The basic examination-day flow may include:
- Reporting at the allotted centre before gate closure
- Completing Aadhaar, biometric or photograph-based verification
- Logging in with centre-issued credentials
- Selecting answers through a mouse on the screen
- Reviewing responses before automatic or manual submission
The syllabus, number of questions, marking scheme, permitted languages and examination duration should not be assumed from coaching claims. Students must wait for the official bulletin. A digital format changes how answers are recorded, but it does not automatically change Physics, Chemistry or Biology content.
Will NEET 2027 Have Multiple Shifts And Normalisation?
This is the biggest unanswered question. More than 20 lakh candidates cannot easily be seated at computer terminals in one session. A reported NEET 2027 roadmap covers five or six days, around 1,000 centres in 500 cities and roughly five lakh candidates per day. These figures are part of a reported plan, not the final notification.
Multiple shifts would require different question sets. That immediately raises concerns about paper difficulty and rank calculation. In other NTA examinations, percentile-based normalisation may be used when candidates sit in different sessions. NEET ranks are highly sensitive because one or two marks can separate large numbers of candidates.
As of July 22, 2026, NTA has not published a NEET 2027 normalisation formula. Students should therefore avoid social-media posts claiming that percentiles, raw marks or shift-wise rankings have already been finalised. The agency will need to explain question equivalence, score calculation, answer-key challenges and audit records before applications open.
How Should Students Prepare For NEET 2027?
Preparation should still begin with the NCERT syllabus and timed question practice. The new task is becoming comfortable with reading long Physics and Biology questions on a screen without losing speed. Candidates should take full mock tests on a desktop or laptop, not only on a phone.
The NTA mock-test platform can help students practise logging in, navigating between questions and using review tools. During mocks, candidates should track accidental clicks, unanswered questions and time spent moving across sections. Mouse control and screen reading may feel minor, but unfamiliarity can waste several minutes.
Students should also follow the official NEET website for the application schedule, syllabus, city list, accessibility rules and mock-test notices. Coaching announcements may arrive earlier, but only the NTA bulletin will settle the final structure.
