President’s Rule Or New CM? What Happens In Tamil Nadu Today After Governor Rejects Vijay’s Majority Claim

Tamil Nadu is facing a dramatic government-formation deadlock after Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar reportedly declined to invite TVK chief Vijay for swearing-in without clear proof of majority support. Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam emerged as the single-largest party with 108 seats in the 234-member Assembly, but the majority mark is 118.

That 10-seat gap has now turned Chennai politics into a high-stakes numbers game. NDTV reported that the Governor is not convinced TVK has the numbers yet, even after meeting Vijay more than once.

Why Vijay’s Majority Claim Hit A Roadblock

The Governor’s stand is simple: TVK must show support from enough MLAs before the oath ceremony can move ahead. Times of India reported that Governor Arlekar told Vijay the swearing-in can happen only after he demonstrates majority support in the Assembly.

This has created a tense wait for TVK cadres, Vijay fans, alliance partners, and rival parties. TVK is short of the magic number, so it needs written support from independents or smaller parties. Mint reported that TVK’s easier route could involve support from parties such as CPI, PMK, DMDK or other smaller groups.

Can President’s Rule Be Imposed In Tamil Nadu?

President’s Rule is possible only if no party or alliance can form a stable government. It is not the first option. The Governor can first ask TVK to prove numbers, invite another alliance, or wait for a clear claim from rival parties.

Rediff quoted former Lok Sabha Secretary General P D T Achary saying the Governor’s conduct is defensible on constitutional grounds because he is asking Vijay to prove majority support.

If no side crosses 118, the Governor may send a report to the President. Then, under Article 356, President’s Rule may be considered. Fresh elections can also follow later if no workable government is formed.

Could DMK And AIADMK Join Hands?

The biggest political twist is the reported buzz around DMK and AIADMK exploring a rare arrangement to keep Vijay out of power. NDTV in X reported that such a move would need backing from Left parties and VCK.

Why Smaller Parties Hold The Key

In a hung Assembly, smaller parties suddenly become power brokers. VCK, CPI, CPI(M), PMK, DMDK, independents, and Congress can influence who enters Fort St George. Times of India also reported that AIADMK leader EPS held talks with MLAs-elect in Puducherry amid the political uncertainty.

What Happens Today In Tamil Nadu?

Today’s likely options are clear. Vijay may submit fresh letters of support. The Governor may ask for stronger documentary proof. Another alliance may stake claim. Or, if no side convinces Raj Bhavan, the state may edge closer to President’s Rule.

For now, Tamil Nadu does not have a clean winner with 118 MLAs. Vijay has momentum, TVK has public attention, and rivals are racing to block him. The next move depends on one thing only: who can show the numbers first.
