Your UPI app shows “Payment Successful”, but the receiver says no money has arrived. The amount has already left your bank account. Should you send it again? Not yet. The payment may need verification before you can establish whether a refund is due.
India recorded 24.51 billion UPI transactions worth ₹29.82 lakh crore in August 2026, NPCI’s official figures.
For anyone facing a missing payment, the immediate task is to identify the transaction status, contact the correct bank, and follow the applicable RBI refund timeline.
Key Highlights
- UPI payment complaints can be reported through participating apps, banks, and NPCI.
- Eligible failed person-to-person transfers require reversal by T+1 day.
- Certain failed merchant payments have a T+5-day reversal deadline.
- Delayed reversals may attract ₹100 daily compensation.
- Unresolved banking complaints can be escalated through RBI’s Ombudsman mechanism.
Why Does UPI Show Successful When Money Has Not Arrived?
A successful payment notification and a missing bank credit need closer examination. The receiver may be checking an account different from the one linked to the UPI ID. Sometimes the banking app has not displayed the latest entry.
Start with the receiver’s actual bank statement. Then match the beneficiary name, UPI ID, and transaction amount against your payment record.
Suppose ₹5,000 has been debited from your account. You send another ₹5,000 because the first payment is missing. If both transfers eventually reach the receiver, you have paid ₹10,000.
There is another distinction. Money successfully transferred to an incorrect but valid UPI ID does not automatically qualify as a failed-payment refund. NPCI’s UPI FAQs confirm that an initiated UPI payment cannot simply be stopped.
How to Raise a UPI Complaint Through Your App, Bank or NPCI
The transaction reference is more useful than a payment screenshot. Banks use it to investigate where the amount went.
Here is the complaint process:
- Open your UPI app: Visit Transaction History and select the disputed payment in Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, BHIM, or your banking app.
- Find the complaint option: Look for Help, Report Issue, or UPI Help, where available. Select the appropriate transaction problem.
- Contact your bank: If the app cannot register the issue, request a transaction trace from the bank linked to the debited account.
- Use the NPCI portal: Visit the official NPCI complaint page and provide the required payment information, including the 12-digit RRN where requested.
- Save the acknowledgement: Keep the complaint reference number and bank responses for follow-up.
One limitation deserves attention. NPCI’s UPI Help guidelines restrict complaints on successful person-to-person transactions through that feature. If the transfer shows as successful but remains disputed, the bank should investigate.
NPCI’s complaint portal forwards eligible complaints to the relevant member institution. The bank remains responsible for resolving them.
UPI Refund Timeline: RBI’s T+1 and T+5 Rules Explained
Refund deadlines are not identical for every UPI problem.
Under the RBI’s September 20, 2019 failed-transaction framework, the applicable timeline depends on whether the payment was a funds transfer or merchant transaction.
| Failed Transaction Type | Reversal Deadline | Compensation for Delay |
| Account debited, beneficiary not credited | T+1 day | ₹100 per day beyond T+1 |
| Account debited, merchant confirmation not received | T+5 days | ₹100 per day beyond T+5 |
Here, T refers to the transaction date, and the prescribed timelines use calendar days.
For example, if an eligible person-to-person payment fails on October 15, reversal is due by October 16. Compensation applies if the prescribed deadline is exceeded.
These rules concern qualifying failed transactions. A transfer recorded as successful needs investigation before anyone assumes that reversal or compensation is due.
How to Track Your UPI Refund and Escalate a Complaint
After registering a complaint, retain the same reference number throughout your follow-up. Filing repeated complaints without referring to the original case may complicate communication.
- UPI app: Open the disputed transaction and check its complaint or refund status.
- NPCI: Use the complaint-status option on the NPCI portal.
- Bank: Request the latest investigation result using your RRN and complaint acknowledgement.
- RBI: If the regulated entity has not responded within 30 days, or its response is unsatisfactory, approach the RBI Complaint Management System.
RBI permits eligible Ombudsman complaints after an unsatisfactory response without waiting for the full 30 days. The portal also provides complaint tracking.
1. How many days does a failed UPI payment take to refund?
For an eligible failed person-to-person transfer, RBI prescribes reversal by T+1 day. Merchant payments without confirmation have a different T+5 limit. Always verify the transaction status first.
2. Can my bank trace a successful UPI transaction?
Yes. Give your bank the 12-digit RRN, transaction date, amount, and recipient details. Request a trace of the beneficiary credit rather than relying on screenshots alone.
3. Can I claim ₹100 compensation for a delayed UPI refund?
Not automatically. RBI’s ₹100-per-day compensation applies when a qualifying failed transaction exceeds its prescribed reversal deadline. A successful transfer under investigation does not automatically qualify for compensation.
4. What happens if I send money to the wrong UPI ID?
A correctly executed transfer to the wrong valid UPI ID usually cannot be cancelled. Contact your bank immediately to request assistance; recovery depends on the circumstances.
5. What should I do if I accidentally pay a merchant twice?
First, establish whether both debits reached the merchant. If they did, seek a refund from the merchant; report any separate failed payment through your bank.
