Many LPG consumers in India are suddenly receiving messages about subsidy eligibility, income-tax records, and a seven-day response window. The warning has created panic because it directly talks about the annual income limit of Rs 10 lakh and the possibility of LPG subsidy being discontinued.
The rule itself is not new. The Petroleum Ministry had earlier decided that LPG subsidy benefit would not be available if the consumer or spouse had taxable income above Rs 10 lakh in the previous financial year, as computed under the Income Tax Act, 1961. Recent reports now say oil marketing companies have started sending fresh alerts to consumers whose income-tax records may cross this limit.
Why LPG Subsidy May Be Blocked For Income Above 10 Lakh
The latest alert is linked to income-based verification. If available tax records show that the LPG consumer or a linked family member has gross taxable income above Rs 10 lakh, the consumer may be asked to respond or submit a declaration through the LPG distributor.
Economic Times reported that Indane users have received warning messages saying subsidy may be stopped permanently unless they respond within seven days. The report also says tax records are now being used to decide LPG subsidy eligibility.
This does not mean every LPG consumer will lose subsidy this week. It mainly affects those whose income details appear above the allowed ceiling, or those whose family-linked records require confirmation. The same Rs 10 lakh ceiling has existed for years, but fresh messages have brought the issue back into public view.
The government’s larger aim has been to keep subsidised LPG support targeted toward households that need price support more. PMUY, or Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, remains the main welfare-linked LPG scheme. The official PMUY portal says the scheme has crossed 10.35 crore connections and provides cash assistance for eligible households, along with first refill and stove support.
What The New LPG Subsidy Message Means For Consumers
If you receive an LPG subsidy warning message, read it carefully before reacting. The message may mention that income-tax records show income above the prescribed limit. It may also ask you to submit a declaration if your income is actually below Rs 10 lakh.
Consumers should not ignore such alerts, especially if the message comes through the registered mobile number linked with Indane, Bharat Gas, or HP Gas. At the same time, do not click suspicious links, share OTPs, or send Aadhaar, PAN, bank details, or DAC codes to unknown numbers.
A safe route is simple: open the official LPG app or website, contact your distributor directly, or visit the agency with valid documents. IndianOil, Bharat Petroleum, and HPCL customers should use only official service channels for subsidy, KYC, booking, and delivery updates.
IndianOil X post is asking customers not to believe rumours and confirming domestic LPG households remain a priority.
Who Should Check Their LPG Account First
Three groups should check their LPG account first. The first group includes consumers who filed income tax returns showing taxable income above Rs 10 lakh in the last financial year. The second group includes households where the spouse’s income crosses this level. The third group includes people who received an official alert but believe their income is below the limit.
If your income is below Rs 10 lakh and you still received the message, do not panic. Keep your income proof, PAN details, consumer number, and distributor details ready. Submit the required declaration only through official or distributor-approved channels.

How To Protect Your Subsidy And Avoid Fraud
The biggest mistake is replying to random messages in a hurry. Fraudsters often copy official language and add fake links. A genuine distributor will not ask you to reveal OTPs, debit card PINs, internet banking passwords, or UPI PINs.
Before sharing any information, verify your LPG consumer number, distributor name, and registered mobile number. You can also check the official PAHAL/DBTL information page from the Petroleum Ministry, which says applicable LPG subsidy is transferred directly to beneficiary bank accounts.
Consumers should also check whether their bank account is active and correctly linked for subsidy transfer. In PMUY-related cases, the official portal lists Aadhaar, bank account details, ration card or family composition documents, and other KYC documents as part of the application process.
For higher-income households, the message may not be an error. The older government rule clearly excludes consumers if the consumer or spouse has taxable income above Rs 10 lakh in the previous financial year. A Ministry annual report also records the rationalisation of LPG subsidy for higher-income groups and mentions exclusion from subsidy from 1 October 2016.
The practical step is clear: check first, then respond. If your income crosses the limit, subsidy may not continue. If your income does not cross the limit, file the declaration with the distributor within the stated period.
For ordinary households, this update is a reminder to keep LPG KYC, Aadhaar linking, bank details, and mobile number updated. For PMUY beneficiaries, it is even more important because targeted subsidy support remains tied to verified beneficiary records.
