Why India Could Be A Crucial Test For Apple Foldables

India is no longer simply a low-cost smartphone market. Counterpoint Research’s 2025 India smartphone report says more than one in five smartphones shipped in the country during 2025 was premium, while Apple finished the year with a 28% value share. The iPhone 16 was also India’s most-shipped smartphone model for 2025.

At the same time, foldables remain small. Business Standard’s report on India’s foldable market said the country could ship more than 650,000 foldable phones in 2026. Samsung held 89% of foldable shipment share, with Motorola next at 8%. Foldables were expected to account for only 2% to 3% of overall smartphone market value.

That is why Apple’s arrival could change the category’s visibility. The company already has a large premium customer base, retail reach, and financing support. A costly foldable would probably lean on exchange offers and long-tenure EMI plans.
