NEET-UG could be heading for its biggest format change in years. The Ministry of Education is preparing a national computer-based testing infrastructure strategy while the government examines whether the medical entrance exam should move away from pen-and-paper and OMR sheets.
The proposal is not yet a final NEET 2027 rule. As of 30 September 2026, officials have said the final design and timeline are expected after the Nandan Nilekani-led High-Powered Task Force submits its recommendations. That distinction is important for aspirants planning their preparation.
Key Highlights
- The Education Ministry is working on a nationwide examination-grade CBT network, with more centres and standardised computer infrastructure across regions.
- NTA Director General Abhishek Singh has said NEET will move to CBT “very soon”, but a final transition plan has not yet been announced.
- A CBT shift could change how candidates answer, review and submit responses, while also creating new questions around centre capacity, power backup and digital access.
What Is Happening With The NEET CBT Proposal?
A fresh Indian Express report on the proposed NEET CBT shift says the Education Ministry is building a strategy that could support NEET-UG and other large entrance tests in computer-based mode. The plan includes increasing the number of testing locations and reducing the geographic gap between candidates and suitable centres.
NEET is still conducted as a paper-based examination. In May 2026, the NTA’s official examination release said approximately 22.79 lakh candidates had registered, showing why a digital switch cannot be treated like a routine software update. The June re-examination was later held for more than 20 lakh candidates across 5,440 centres in India and 14 centres abroad.
The scale also explains why the Centre is examining rural access, connectivity and the availability of comparable facilities across districts before taking a final call.
Why Is The Government Building A Wider CBT Network?
The immediate work goes beyond NEET. NTA already conducts JEE Main, CUET, UGC-NET and several other examinations through computers. Its official strategic plan has long described computer-based testing as a scalable alternative to traditional paper testing.
The current push has become sharper after recent concerns around examination security. In September, NTA asked AICTE-linked government institutions to provide details about functional computers, internet connectivity, networking, power backup, CCTV systems and available space. These details could help identify locations that may be developed into standard testing centres.
NTA chief Abhishek Singh also said in an ANI interview that CBT is the direction in which the agency wants to move. An official ANI X post from 13 September carried his comments on secure examination technology and testing systems. He also said NTA is exploring AI-based analysis of exam logs and data to flag possible irregularities.
What Would A Computer-Based NEET Change For Aspirants?
For students, the most visible change would be the disappearance of the OMR answer sheet. Questions would appear on a computer screen, and candidates would select answers digitally. They may also be able to move between questions, mark items for review and change responses before final submission, depending on the rules NTA eventually publishes.
What CBT Could Look Like On Exam Day
That does not automatically mean the syllabus, question count, marking scheme or duration will change. Those details would have to come through an official NEET information bulletin.
Aspirants who have prepared almost entirely through printed mock papers may need to add screen-based practice. Reading long Physics or Biology questions on a monitor, using an on-screen question palette and managing review flags can feel different from flipping pages.
What Aspirants Should Watch Before Changing Their Preparation
No student needs to abandon pen-and-paper practice today. The proposed format is still tied to infrastructure planning and the task force’s recommendations. Until NTA issues a formal notification, the safer approach is to keep subject preparation unchanged while becoming comfortable with CBT-style mocks.
What could become important is familiarity, not advanced computer knowledge. A candidate would mainly need to read, click, review and submit accurately. Coaching centres and schools may also start offering more screen-based full-length tests if the transition is confirmed.
The biggest policy question is whether enough secure centres can be created without making travel harder for candidates from smaller towns. Reliable electricity, backup systems and uniform hardware would also be essential if lakhs of students are tested digitally.
FAQs
Will NEET 2027 definitely be held in CBT mode?
No final NEET 2027 CBT notification has been issued yet. The government is preparing infrastructure, but the final decision is expected after the Nilekani-led task force reports.
Will the NEET syllabus change if the exam becomes computer-based?
A change in delivery mode does not automatically change the syllabus. Candidates should follow the official NTA syllabus and wait for the next information bulletin.
Would students need strong computer skills for a CBT NEET?
Probably not. Basic familiarity with selecting answers, moving between questions and using review options should be enough, although official instructions will define the final interface.
Could NEET be held in multiple shifts after moving online?
That has not been officially confirmed. Multiple shifts would raise questions about question-paper equivalence and scoring, so candidates should wait for NTA’s announced examination model.
Where should aspirants check for official NEET CBT updates?
The official NTA NEET website and Ministry of Education channels should be treated as primary sources. Students should avoid relying on viral posts without an official notice.
