Could WhatsApp stop working because the SIM used to register it is no longer in your phone? India’s Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has given messaging platforms until December 31, 2026, to link accounts continuously with the registered SIM.
January 1, 2027, is therefore being reported as the expected start. The government has not separately announced a universal switch-off that day.
Key Highlights
- WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal and five other services are covered by the DoT direction.
- Removing or deactivating the registered SIM could interrupt access once SIM binding is implemented.
- December 31, 2026, is the compliance deadline for platforms.
- The earlier six-hour mandatory web logout rule has been replaced by risk-based logouts.
What Exactly Changes on January 1, 2027?
The original DoT direction went out on November 28, 2025. It targeted apps that identify users through Indian mobile numbers. In its December 1 government explanation, the department said an account must remain linked to the specific active SIM present in the device.
A 90-day compliance window was later extended amid technical difficulties. In an April 2, 2026, Rajya Sabha reply, Minister of State for Communications Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar confirmed December 31, 2026, as the revised date.
It does not require everyone to buy a new SIM. App checks and enforcement timing may vary. WhatsApp confirmed in April that it was testing SIM binding with Indian users.
Who Might Find WhatsApp or Telegram Not Working?
A phone connected to Wi-Fi is not automatically exempt. Under SIM binding, the SIM registered to the messaging account still needs to be active and in that phone.
Three common situations deserve attention:
- SIM moved to another phone: A WhatsApp account left open on the old handset may fail verification if its registered SIM now sits elsewhere.
- Number disconnected: An expired or deactivated registered number could block continued use until the account meets the verification requirement.
- Travelling overseas: Using an Indian SIM on international roaming is not barred merely because the user is abroad, the DoT has clarified.
A second SIM used for mobile data is not the central issue. The registered number’s SIM is. Wi-Fi is not banned; some dual-SIM and eSIM details remain unclear.
Will WhatsApp Web and Linked Devices Log Out Every Six Hours?
No blanket six-hour logout requirement is currently specified. That figure came from the November 2025 direction, which asked web versions to end sessions within six hours and reconnect using a QR code.
The position changed. In the April 2026 parliamentary reply, the government said web logouts should follow risk-based analysis, with no fixed interval. Routine six-hour disconnections are not the current rule.
Linked laptops and tablets still need attention. The precise handling of desktop apps, companion phones and SIM-free tablets has not been fully explained in public guidance. A blanket January 1 shutdown of linked devices is not confirmed.
Why Has India Ordered SIM Binding, and What Should Users Do?
The government says scammers exploit messaging accounts after removing or transferring the Indian SIM originally used for registration. It cites more than ā¹22,800 crore in cyber-fraud losses during 2024. That figure covers cyber fraud generally, not these apps alone.
The aim is to make remote impersonation harder. Critics have questioned the inconvenience to travellers and people managing work accounts across devices. SIM binding alone also cannot guarantee that an account is scam-free.
For now, a few practical steps are worthwhile:
- Keep the SIM or eSIM linked to your account active and make sure your mobile number remains under your control.
- If you are switching phones or replacing a SIM, follow the app’s official verification process rather than relying on an old logged-in session.
- Watch for genuine in-app notices. Avoid links promising to ‘activate SIM binding’ in exchange for an OTP.
Follow official announcements, and never share verification codes with supposed account-fixers.
FAQs
Will WhatsApp stop working on January 1, 2027?
Not for everyone. December 31 is the deadline for platforms, not a confirmed instant shutdown. Access could be interrupted if the registered SIM is missing or inactive after enforcement begins.
Does WhatsApp need mobile data from the registered SIM?
The direction calls for the active registered SIM to be present in the handset. It does not say mobile internet must run through that SIM; Wi-Fi remains possible.
Will Telegram also require SIM binding?
Yes. Telegram was named alongside WhatsApp in the DoT directive. However, the government has not published Telegram-specific verification screens or detailed instructions covering every device setup.
Will WhatsApp Web log out after six hours?
No. The six-hour requirement from the original direction was revised. The government now specifies risk-based web session logouts without any fixed interval for every user.
Will an eSIM or international roaming still work?
International roaming is allowed where the registered SIM stays in the phone. The exact handling of eSIM profiles and device changes remains dependent on platform implementation.
