₹12 Lakh Salary, ₹4 Lakh Lifestyle? Bengaluru Man’s Viral Reality Check

A salary of ₹12 lakh per year can seem like a comfortable one. However, one Bengaluru professional says that the rent, traffic, the number of coffees, and paid activities make it feel much smaller. His remarks on Bengaluru’s rising cost of living have led to the question of whether a good job offer leaves any money and time for the city. This opinion is his, not theirs, and is not reflective of what the average citizen can afford.

Why ₹12 Lakh Can Feel Like ₹4 Lakh

Bengaluru-based product manager and content maker Shivank Goel had his say on the platform Instagram. People with income less than ₹1 lakh should think twice before relocating to the city, he added.

He said that leisure can be paid for at cafes, and hobbies may have a ticketed event or subscription. His sensational conclusion: One could feel like earning ₹4 lakh per year after starting city life, even with a ₹12 lakh annual salary.

Housing And Travel Are Key Pressure Points

This is about a security deposit of ₹2 lakh and a 5-km cab ride can cost ₹600, Goel said, adding that it can take about an hour to travel in traffic. These are examples taken from his video; these are not citywide averages. They demonstrate that working by moving can have high initial expenses.

There is a constant competition between rent, travelling, meals and activities, and saving. Newcomers may find they have cash needs before they receive their first salary, and cash in hand is not the same as what they find on paper. He added that even going to free Cubbon Park can be an expensive affair if it takes hours.

Bengaluru Still Offers Job Opportunities

High costs sit beside a strong job market. A TeamLease Services report published by India Today found that 68% of employers surveyed named Bengaluru as a workforce-expansion target for October 2026 to March 2027.

The survey covered 1,239 employers across 23 industries and 20 cities. The city still offers career opportunities, but workers need to weigh salary against rent, commuting and lifestyle before relocating.

Online Reaction Shows No Single Answer

Reactions were mixed. Some users agreed that rent and leisure can drain income quickly. Others said careful budgeting, shared housing and cheaper activities make lower salaries workable.

Someone sharing a home, using public transport and cooking would face different costs from someone renting alone, taking cabs and eating out. The same salary can buy very different lifestyles, depending on location and choices.

The Real Question Is Take-Home Pay

₹12 lakh per annum equals ₹1 lakh a month before deductions; it is not necessarily take-home pay. The viral comparison is a warning about purchasing power, not proof that every earner lives like someone on ₹4 lakh.

Before taking a job, calculate take-home salary, rent, deposit, commute, food, and leisure. In Bengaluru, the real question is what remains after bills and how much time is left to enjoy it.
