An airline cancellation gives passengers a choice between an acceptable alternative flight and the applicable refund. Extra compensation depends on the notice given and why the flight was cancelled.
For anyone seeking a cancelled flight refund in India, the 2026 rules contain a useful change: agent and portal bookings have a 14-working-day refund deadline. The revised framework took effect on March 26, 2026, as confirmed in a Civil Aviation Ministry parliamentary reply.
Key Highlights
- Credit-card refunds must reach the original card account within seven days of cancellation.
- Compensation can accompany a full refund when qualifying cancellation conditions apply.
- Unresolved refund complaints can be raised through AirSewa.
How to Request a Cancelled Flight Refund in India
Save the airline’s cancellation message before opening the booking. It establishes that the airline cancelled the service and records when the passenger received notice.
- Record the booking: Keep the PNR, ticket number, payment receipt, and original itinerary.
- State the request: Use the airline’s refund channel and select the airline-cancellation reason. Request the refund rather than a voucher if that is the preferred outcome.
- Preserve the trail: Save the acknowledgement, claim number, and screenshots. For agent bookings, contact both the agent and airline.
Do not accidentally submit a voluntary cancellation request when the airline has already cancelled the flight. If the portal offers only a chargeable cancellation button, ask support to record the disruption first.
At the airport, passengers already reported for their original flight should also ask about meals and refreshments while waiting for the alternative service, under the government’s passenger-facilitation guidance.
When Is Compensation Payable Besides the Refund?
The DGCA cancellation provisions distinguish advance notification from cancellation without the prescribed notice.
With at least two weeks’ notice, the airline must arrange an acceptable alternative or refund. Between two weeks and 24 hours before departure, it must offer an alternative flight or refund acceptable to the passenger.
Where the notification requirement is not met, the rule provides an acceptable alternative or compensation plus a full ticket refund, subject to exceptions.
| Scheduled Flight Block Time | Compensation Ceiling |
| Up to and including one hour | ₹5,000 |
| More than one hour, up to two hours | ₹7,500 |
| More than two hours | ₹10,000 |
Compensation equals the lower of that ceiling and the one-way basic fare plus airline fuel charge. Block time runs from aircraft movement for departure to its final stop after arrival.
For an eligible 90-minute flight with a combined basic fare and fuel charge of ₹4,200, compensation would be ₹4,200 alongside the full refund.
Missing contact details supplied at booking can affect compensation eligibility. Extraordinary circumstances beyond the airline’s control can also remove the compensation obligation.
How Long Should the Refund Take?
Under DGCA’s revised refund requirements:
- Credit-card payment: Within seven days of cancellation, to the original card account.
- Cash bought at an airline office: Immediate refund from the office where purchased.
- Travel agent or portal: Within 14 working days; the airline remains responsible for ensuring completion.
An email saying “refund initiated” is worth retaining, but the passenger should still confirm receipt. Ask for the transaction reference when the stated deadline passes.
Special disruption orders can impose different deadlines. During the December 2025 IndiGo crisis, the ministry ordered pending refunds cleared by December 7. That incident-specific deadline should not be presented as today’s universal rule.
Where to Complain About an Unpaid Refund
First, raise a written complaint with the airline, then escalate unresolved cases to its nodal officer and appellate authority. Their contact details appear on airline websites.
If the response remains inadequate, submit the PNR, cancellation notice, payment evidence and correspondence through AirSewa. Specify whether the dispute concerns unpaid fare, deductions, or compensation, and retain the grievance number for tracking.
The ministry’s grievance guidance provides escalation when the response is unsatisfactory or the platform’s configured response period expires. Further remedies through the appropriate statutory body or court remain available.
FAQs
Does Fog Cancellation Remove Refund Rights?
Weather beyond the airline’s control can exclude additional compensation. It does not automatically erase the passenger’s refund or alternative-flight options when the airline cancels the service.
Can the Airline Insist on a Voucher?
Holding the refund in a credit shell is the passenger’s choice under DGCA rules. The airline should not impose future-travel credit as its default refund method.
Are Non-Refundable Tickets Completely Excluded?
No. Airline cancellation has separate refund protections. Even for voluntary cancellation or no-show on non-refundable fares, statutory taxes and specified airport and passenger charges remain refundable.
What If the Passenger Cancels Instead?
Direct airline-website bookings allow cancellation within 48 hours when departure is at least seven days away domestically or 15 days internationally. Outside that window, fare conditions apply.
Do Identical Refund Rules Cover Every Foreign Airline?
The ministry’s March 2026 reply says foreign carriers’ primary refund regulations follow their country of origin. Passengers should examine the operating carrier and applicable passenger protections.
