E-FRRO Registration and Visa Extension in India: How Foreign Students, Medical Visitors and Other Eligible Travellers Can Access 35 Online Services

Foreign students, medical visitors and other eligible travellers can request registration or visa extensions through e-FRRO in India. Each request remains subject to the applicant’s visa conditions. On November 2, 2026, the Home Ministry confirmed that the system provides 35 online services, including registration, extensions and visa conversion.

The government announcement also sets a target of FRROs in all state capitals by 2027. For applicants, the immediate task remains identifying the correct service and deadline.

Key Highlights

  • E-FRRO handles 35 online immigration services, subject to eligibility.
  • The government reports that India now has 20 FRRO offices.
  • Registration and visa extension are separate requests.
  • Online applications still require supporting evidence and official scrutiny.

What The 35-Service Update Means For Travellers

This is an expansion update, rather than the launch of e-FRRO. The November announcement describes an existing online system alongside a wider regional office network.

Five offices have been established since 2025: Jaipur, Chandigarh and Guwahati in 2025, followed by Aizawl and Amravati in 2026. Three more have been notified at Kohima, Agartala and Bhubaneswar. The October 28 notification assigns the latter offices jurisdiction over Nagaland, Tripura and Odisha respectively.

The service count does not mean every visitor qualifies for every option. Registration records an eligible foreigner’s stay; an extension seeks permission to remain longer. Address changes, passport updates, and exit permits address different circumstances. The authorities assess each request against the applicable visa rules before deciding whether to approve it.

E-FRRO Registration And Visa Extension: Who Needs Which?

A student arriving for a degree and a patient visiting briefly for treatment may face different registration obligations. Visa conditions, permitted stay, and nationality must be read together.

Traveller’s PositionRegistration Point To Check
Foreign studentStudy in India directs students to register within 14 days after arrival, using their SII ID.
Medical or medical-attendant visa exceeding 180 daysGeneral guidance requires registration within 14 days; nationality-specific exceptions apply.
Visa permitting a stay of 180 days or lessNormally exempt while remaining within that period, unless the visa endorsement requires registration.
Longer-validity visa limiting each stay to 180 daysRemaining beyond the applicable continuous or annual aggregate limit triggers registration requirements.

The Study in India guidance sets out the student registration step. Broader registration requirements appear in the Immigration and Foreigners Rules, 2025, with later amendments affecting some deadlines.

The June 2026 registration amendment brought one such deadline forward. For the specified case of a visitor admitted for 180 days or less who wants to remain beyond 180 days, registration is now due before the 180-day period expires, replacing the earlier additional 14-day window.

That does not authorise someone with a shorter permitted stay to wait until day 180. Registration deadlines and permission to remain are different questions; an extension must address the actual stay limit.

How To Apply Online And Prepare Supporting Documents

Begin at the official e-FRRO portal, using your own email address and a valid Indian mobile number for authentication.

  • After creating your login, choose registration, visa extension, or the other service you need.
  • Complete the application and upload the requested photograph and documents.
  • Follow subsequent instructions for corrections or payment through the portal.

A saved account is not a completed immigration registration. The portal says scrutiny starts only after successful application submission.

Prepare readable passport, visa, and arrival-record copies, plus evidence of your Indian address. Student cases commonly need an institution’s bona fide certificate; medical cases need evidence supporting the treatment-related request. The relevant service’s current checklist takes priority over a generic document list.

For example, a certificate confirming enrolment should identify the course period. An extension request needs evidence explaining the additional stay sought, rather than merely repeating that the applicant entered India to study. The official student certificate format specifically provides for a recommended extension date.

Fees, Follow-Up And Office Visits

Follow the instructions issued for your application:

  • Pay the amount officially intimated through the portal’s payment gateway.
  • Attend if the FRRO specifically calls you for an interview.

The portal advises applying at least two weeks ahead; this is preparation advice, not a guaranteed processing time. Track progress through your dashboard and respond to official messages.

Educational institutions and accommodation providers also have reporting duties under the 2025 rules. Their reporting does not replace a traveller’s own registration obligation where applicable. A hostel recording a student’s arrival and the student obtaining registration serve different requirements.

Start your e-FRRO registration and visa extension request through the official portal, with your visa conditions and supporting records beside you. Resolve an unclear deadline with the responsible FRRO before it passes.

FAQs

Do applicants need an agent?

No intermediary is required. The official portal tells foreigners to apply themselves and warns against agents who charge for supposedly faster or express approval of their applications.

Can one account cover family members?

Applications for family members may be submitted through the same user ID. Each person still needs an individual online form, rather than one combined family application.

Do OCI cardholders need regular foreigners’ registration?

The 2025 rules exempt registered OCI cardholders from this registration requirement. Resident OCI cardholders must nevertheless report changes in their permanent residential address or occupation electronically.

Is hospital reporting the patient’s registration?

No. Hospital and accommodation reporting operates separately from a foreign visitor’s registration. The Medical and Ayush Visa Portal handles hospital-related functions, including invitation letters and reporting.

Is e-FRRO the same as an Indian e-visa?

An e-visa concerns permission for travel and entry under its conditions. Once in India, eligible foreigners use e-FRRO to register or request permission to stay longer.
