Most Important Entrance Exams After Class 12 in India: Engineering, Medical, Law and Design

A student targeting an IIT cannot rely on a JEE Main score alone. A student applying to National Law University Delhi needs a different test from the one used by most other National Law Universities. These differences affect applications before board results arrive.

Several 2027 applications are open in October 2026. Here are the important entrance exams after Class 12 in India and their confirmed deadlines.

Key Highlights

  • JEE Main and JEE Advanced serve different engineering admission routes.
  • NEET UG is the main national examination for undergraduate medical seats.
  • CLAT and AILET are separate law admission tests.
  • UCEED, NID DAT and NIFTEE lead to different design programmes.

Engineering Entrance Exams: JEE Main, Advanced and BITSAT

For NITs, IIITs and participating engineering colleges, the central route is JEE Main. An IIT B.Tech applicant generally needs to qualify through JEE Main and then take JEE Advanced. In 2026, eligibility for Advanced included being among the top 2,50,000 successful JEE Main B.E./B. Tech candidates, alongside other conditions. The 2027 rules must be checked when released.

There are alternatives beyond the IIT system:

ExamPrincipal Admission Route
JEE MainNITs, IIITs and other participating institutions
JEE AdvancedIIT undergraduate engineering programmes
BITSATBITS Pilani campuses and eligible integrated programmes

BITSAT’s 2026 eligibility requires at least 75% combined in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics for most B.E. programmes, with at least 60% in each. State-level tests such as MHT CET and other institutional exams provide additional routes. Board marks cannot replace a mandatory entrance test.

Medical Entrance Exams: NEET UG and Admission Rules

NEET UG is the essential examination for MBBS and BDS admission in India. It is also used for BAMS, BHMS, and several other regulated undergraduate healthcare pathways. Physics, Chemistry, and Biology preparation is central, but the exact age, subject, and qualifying requirements come from the admission-year bulletin.

A qualifying NEET score is not an MBBS seat. Ranking, category, seat availability and counselling determine the actual offer. The Medical Counselling Committee and state authorities handle different seat pools. Older cutoffs and deadlines may not apply in 2027.

Some nursing and allied-health courses use university or state admissions rather than NEET.

Law Entrance Exams: CLAT 2027 vs AILET 2027

One exam does not cover every National Law University. CLAT 2027 is used for participating NLUs’ five-year integrated law programmes, while AILET 2027 is conducted separately for National Law University Delhi.

Two deadlines are already confirmed:

  • CLAT 2027: Apply by October 31, 2026; examination on December 6, 2026.
  • AILET 2027: Applications close on November 10, 2026; examination on December 13, 2026.

Both exams are for 2027 entry. CLAT UG requires 45% in Class 12, or 40% for SC, ST, and PwD applicants. Students appearing for boards in March or April 2027 may apply provisionally. AILET has its own admission criteria, so one application’s eligibility does not automatically establish eligibility for the other.

Design Entrance Exams: UCEED, NID DAT and NIFTEE

Design admission depends on the institute and programme, not just a student’s interest in drawing. Product design at an IIT and fashion technology at NIFT use different tests.

  • UCEED 2027: For B.Des. admissions at participating IITs and IIITDM Jabalpur. The exam is January 17, 2027; regular registration closes October 31, 2026. Applicants from any Class 12 stream may sit the test, although programme eligibility differs by institute.
  • NID DAT: The National Institute of Design uses design aptitude testing for its advertised undergraduate pathways. Its 2027-28 portal lists November 30, 2026 as the application deadline for the relevant B.Des./integrated pathway.
  • NIFTEE 2027: The National Testing Agency has opened applications for NIFT programmes, including B.Des. and B.F.Tech. Eligibility and test components vary by course.

For general BA, BSc, and BCom degrees, CUET UG is another major route at participating universities. Subject selection must match the target course, not simply the subjects a candidate finds easiest.
