JEE Main vs JEE Advanced 2027: Eligibility, Attempts, Difficulty Level and Admission Process Explained

Indian candidates aiming for IITs usually need JEE Main before JEE Advanced. Main also provides ranks for NITs and IIITs, while Advanced determines regular-entry IIT ranks.

As of October 19, 2026, the official 2027 bulletins remain unpublished. Candidates must distinguish existing rules from predictions.

Key Highlights

  • JEE Main is conducted by the National Testing Agency; JEE Advanced is organised by a designated IIT.
  • The 2026 Advanced rules shortlisted the top 2.5 lakh Main B.E./B. Tech candidates, including category-wise allocations.
  • Main traditionally offers two sessions per year, while Advanced is held once annually.
  • Advanced currently permits two attempts across two consecutive years; a third attempt is only under discussion.
  • Qualifying an exam does not automatically secure a seat. Class 12 and counselling rules still apply.

What Is the Latest Update for the 2027 Exams?

An October 15 report suggested Main registration could start in late October 2026, with Session 1 tentatively January 22–30 and Session 2 in April. NTA has not confirmed those dates. The official notice will determine application deadlines.

On October 18, IIT Kanpur Director Manindra Agrawal said a third Advanced attempt was being discussed, perhaps for special cases. He announced no 2027 rule change. Repeat candidates cannot rely on that possibility.

Eligibility and Attempts: Who Can Apply?

Under previous Main rules, Class 12 graduates from 2025 or 2026 and students appearing in 2027 would normally be eligible for Main 2027. NTA must confirm that window. Engineering admission also carries subject requirements.

The 2026 Advanced eligibility criteria make a narrower distinction:

  • Main Rank: Indian candidates needed to be among the top 2,50,000 successful Main B.E./B.Tech candidates, subject to category allocations and tied ranks.
  • Attempts: No more than two attempts in two consecutive years.
  • Class 12 Year: First appearance normally had to fall within the two qualifying years specified for that examination.
  • Other Checks: Age limits and previous IIT admission restrictions also applied; foreign-national arrangements followed separate provisions.

Under the same pattern, 2026 and 2027 first-time Class 12 appearances would usually qualify. Individual eligibility awaits the 2027 rules.

Passing Main’s Advanced cutoff is only a gateway to the next examination; it is not an IIT admission offer. The 2.5-lakh shortlist also includes category allocations, so candidates should not treat it as one universal percentile threshold.

The 75% board-marks rule applies to admission, not merely writing Main. For IIT admission in 2026, candidates needed 75% aggregate (65% for SC, ST and PWD) or a relevant board top-20-percentile position. NIT criteria require separate checking.

Exam Pattern and Difficulty: Why Is Advanced Different?

Both cover Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. Main uses a defined computer-based pattern with multiple-choice and numerical-answer questions; speed and accuracy are central.

Advanced requires two compulsory three-hour papers in 2026. Question formats and marking can vary, with problems involving connected concepts. A strong Main percentile does not ensure an equally strong Advanced rank.

Main results use NTA scores rather than a simple nationwide percentage of correct answers. For two sessions, NTA applies its published score-selection rules, without adding marks across tests.

For instance, Main might test a mechanics equation directly; Advanced might first require identifying several relevant principles. Neither pattern applies to every question.

How Does Admission Work After the Results?

The normal admission sequence is:

  • Step 1: Register for Main and take the relevant B.E./B. Tech paper. If two sessions are offered, NTA’s stated score-selection method governs the final result.
  • Step 2: Candidates meeting the Advanced shortlist and all other conditions register separately for Advanced.
  • Step 3: Use the appropriate result to participate in JoSAA counselling, fill course preferences, and complete seat-acceptance formalities.
  • Step 4: Meet the applicable Class 12 criteria, category-document requirements, and institute reporting deadlines.

In 2026, JoSAA covered 138 institutions, including 23 IITs and 31 NITs. The 2027 list may change. An exam rank does not guarantee a preferred branch.

Listing only one popular IIT programme can leave an applicant without a seat, despite a respectable rank. Course preferences, category rules, and reported vacancies affect the eventual allocation. Eligible candidates use one JoSAA choice-filling process for IITs and NITs.

FAQs

Can I Take JEE Advanced Without JEE Main?

Normally, Indian candidates must qualify through JEE Main’s B.E./B. Tech paper. Certain foreign-national applicants follow separate eligibility arrangements and may register without a Main rank, if eligible.

How Many Times Can I Attempt JEE Main 2027?

The usual rule allows eligible candidates across three consecutive Class 12-linked years, with two sessions typically available annually. Confirm the 2027 bulletin before calculating attempts.

Will JEE Advanced Allow Three Attempts in 2027?

No third attempt has been officially approved. It remains under discussion, while the published 2026 rules allow two attempts in consecutive years, subject to other conditions.

Are 75% Marks Required to Write JEE Main?

The 75% or top-20-percentile condition generally applies to admission at specified institutes, not simply appearing for Main. Category-specific thresholds and new 2027 rules need checking carefully.

Does Qualifying JEE Advanced Guarantee an IIT Seat?

No. An eligible Advanced rank allows participation in the applicable admission process, but seats depend on programme choices, category, rank, availability, and other admission conditions.
