IIT Madras has opened its September 2026 admission window for students who want to enter selected Bachelor of Science programmes without taking the Joint Entrance Examination. The non-campus route uses IIT Madras’ own qualifier process, giving Class 12 pass-outs a separate path into the Foundation Level.
For the BS in Data Science and Applications, qualifier applications remain open until September 27, 2026. Candidates can apply irrespective of age or academic background, while students who have appeared for their Class 11 final exams may also begin the process and join after passing Class 12.
Key Highlights
- September 27, 2026 is the current application deadline for the September term.
- JEE is not compulsory for candidates using the regular qualifier route.
- Class 12 pass-outs can apply regardless of age or previous academic stream.
- The qualifier includes four weeks of online coursework followed by an in-person examination.
- JEE Advanced-eligible candidates have a separate direct-entry option to the Foundation Level.
Why This IIT Madras Admission Route Is Drawing Attention
This is not a relaxation in IIT Madras’ regular BTech admission rules. It is a separate non-campus BS pathway. IIT Madras’ May 2026 admission announcement listed four programmes: Data Science and Applications, Electronic Systems, Management and Data Science, and Aeronautics and Space Technology.
The Data Science programme says more than 36,000 students are currently enrolled, including over 20,000 pursuing it alongside another degree. That flexibility has attracted students already studying elsewhere, working professionals and learners returning to education later.
IIT Madras is also expanding the portfolio. In a related official update, DoMS IIT Madras highlighted its BS in Management and Data Science on X, adding another analytics-focused option to the institute’s non-campus degree mix.
Who Can Apply For IIT Madras BS Admission 2026?
For the BS in Data Science and Applications, anyone who has passed Class 12 or an accepted equivalent can apply. There is no age limit and applicants are not restricted by their Class 12 stream.
Students who have appeared for their Class 11 final examinations may apply too. They can complete the qualifier stage, but must pass Class 12 before registering for Foundation Level courses. IIT Madras expects applicants to have studied Mathematics and English in Class 10.
The application fee is ₹4,000 for General and OBC applicants, ₹2,000 for SC, ST or eligible PwD applicants, and ₹1,000 for SC or ST applicants who also meet the specified PwD condition. Documents must be uploaded and verified after payment.
How Does The Non-JEE Qualifier Entry Work?
Regular-entry applicants first complete four weeks of IIT Madras coursework covering English I, Mathematics for Data Science I, Statistics for Data Science I and Computational Thinking. Weekly graded assignments decide whether a candidate can sit for the qualifier examination.
General candidates need a minimum assignment average of 40% in each course. OBC-NCL and EWS applicants need 35%, while SC, ST and eligible PwD candidates need 30%.
The qualifier exam is four hours long and covers all four subjects. General candidates must score at least 40% in every course and a 50% overall average. OBC-NCL and EWS candidates need 35% in each course and 45% overall. SC, ST and eligible PwD candidates need 30% in each course and 40% overall.
Clearing the qualifier makes the learner eligible for Foundation Level registration. Candidates qualified to appear for the current year’s JEE Advanced can use a separate route and move directly to Foundation Level after verification and fee payment.
For candidates who have already appeared for or passed Class 12, a cleared qualifier result remains valid for three terms. Those yet to appear for Class 12 get a longer validity window, allowing them to join after completing school.

What Applicants Should Check Before September 27
Students should first confirm that they are applying to the correct BS programme, since eligibility differs. Electronic Systems, for example, requires Class 12 Physics and Mathematics, while Data Science and Management and Data Science have broader entry conditions.
They should also plan for supervised assessments. Teaching, assignments and live sessions are online, but quizzes and examinations are conducted under supervised conditions. Electronic Systems also includes campus-based lab requirements.
Applicants should check the official IIT Madras programme pages before paying because dates, documents and exam arrangements can change. The current published timeline for several BS programmes places Qualifier Week 1 on October 2 and the qualifier exam on November 15, 2026.
