India Census 2027 Dates Announced: Online Self-Enumeration Starts January 10, House-to-House Survey Begins January 25, and Seven Regions Follow Different Schedules

India Census 2027 will open optional online self-enumeration on January 10, followed by house-to-house population counting from January 25 across most states and Union Territories. The Ministry of Home Affairs announced the schedule through an October 30, 2026 notification. Online submissions close January 24; household visits continue until February 28.

The dates do not apply everywhere. Seven states and Union Territories have separate arrangements covering all or specified parts of their territory. Manipur remains outside the announced schedule until further declaration.

Key Highlights

  • Online self-enumeration: January 10–24, 2027, in areas covered by the latest notification
  • Household enumeration: January 25–February 28, 2027
  • Revisional round: March 1–5, 2027
  • Four election-bound states follow an earlier timetable
  • Online submission still requires verification during a household visit

India Census 2027 Dates and What Each Stage Covers

The October 30 notification separates online submission, field visits, and the revisional round. Residents should distinguish the deadline for entering information online from the later dates when enumerators visit homes.

StageDatesPurpose
Optional self-enumerationJanuary 10–24, 2027Residents submit information online
House-to-house enumerationJanuary 25–February 28, 2027Enumerators collect and verify population information
Revisional roundMarch 1–5, 2027Officials address omissions and discrepancies
Census reference point00:00 hours, March 1, 2027The specified moment to which the count relates

The reference point gives the exercise a common time marker even though officials collect information over several weeks. March 1 is therefore not the day every household receives a visit.

Which Seven Regions Follow Different Schedules?

The exceptions involve Goa, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir. However, the geographical coverage differs.

  • Goa, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and non-snow-bound Uttarakhand: Online self-enumeration runs November 16–30, 2026. Household enumeration follows from December 1, 2026, to January 4, 2027, with revision from January 5–9.
  • Ladakh and specified snow-bound areas: Separate arrangements cover Ladakh and designated areas of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Their population enumeration was scheduled during September 2026, with October 1 as the reference date.
  • Manipur: The latest notification excludes the state until further declaration. Residents should await a separate announcement rather than apply another state’s dates.

Uttarakhand appears in both earlier arrangements because its snow-bound and remaining areas follow different calendars. The exception for Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir covers specified snow-bound areas, not their entire populations.

The official Census website displays the election-bound states’ timetable, while its snow-bound areas notification identifies the separate regional arrangements.

How Will Online Self-Enumeration Work?

Online entry gives households an optional way to provide information ahead of field visits. It does not remove the verification stage.

The government’s digital Census explainer, published April 25, 2026, describes the process:

  • Use the official self-enumeration portal during the applicable regional window
  • Keep the unique Self-Enumeration ID generated after successful submission
  • Share that ID with the visiting enumerator so officials can confirm the information

A household that completes the form online should still expect contact from an enumerator. A PIB briefing dated October 12 explicitly confirms subsequent household verification for self-enumerated entries.

What Changes With the Digital Population Count?

Census 2027 introduces mobile-based collection and optional online entry. Population enumeration also includes caste enumeration, following the government’s decision of April 30, 2025. The earlier houselisting phase concerns homes, amenities, and household assets; the population phase collects information about people.

Digital collection still requires substantial fieldwork. Haryana’s October briefing estimated 87,450 enumerators and supervisors, including reserves, for approximately 70,000 enumeration blocks. Those figures concern Haryana, not the national workforce.

For residents, the immediate task is to identify the correct regional window. Follow the official Census announcements for India Census 2027 updates and retain any submission reference for verification.

FAQs

Is online self-enumeration compulsory?

No. The government describes self-enumeration as optional. Residents who do not submit information online remain covered by the house-to-house population enumeration process during their region’s schedule.

Will an enumerator visit after online submission?

Yes. Officials will verify information during a household visit even after online submission. Keep the Self-Enumeration ID available so the enumerator can locate and confirm the entry.

Does January 10 apply to Uttar Pradesh?

No. Uttar Pradesh follows the earlier election-bound states’ timetable, with online self-enumeration from November 16–30, 2026, and household population enumeration beginning on December 1 that year.

What is the Census reference date?

The main schedule uses 00:00 hours on March 1, 2027. It provides a common reference moment for the count rather than a single nationwide visiting day.

Has the government announced Manipur’s population enumeration dates?

The October 30 notification excludes Manipur until further notice. It gives no replacement dates for the state, so residents should follow subsequent official announcements for their schedule.
