RBI Ends Paytm Payments Bank License: Will Your UPI Still Work?

The Reserve Bank of India has cancelled the banking licence of Paytm Payments Bank Limited, bringing the troubled payments bank chapter to a hard close. For users, the big question is simple: will Paytm UPI, QR payments and wallet withdrawals still work? The answer is mostly yes, but with a few user-side checks.

What RBI Has Ordered Against Paytm Payments Bank

RBI cancelled Paytm Payments Bank’s licence from the close of business on April 24, 2026, under the Banking Regulation Act. The bank can no longer carry on banking business, and RBI will move the High Court for winding-up proceedings. The regulator said the action followed serious compliance failures and conduct harmful to depositors’ interest.

This is not a sudden story. In January 2024, RBI had already stopped Paytm Payments Bank from taking fresh deposits, wallet top-ups and FASTag top-ups after March 15, 2024. Since then, the bank had mainly been in exit mode.

Will Paytm UPI Still Work For Users?

Yes, Paytm UPI should continue for most users because Paytm’s app now runs through the Third-Party Application Provider model, not through Paytm Payments Bank. NPCI had allowed One 97 Communications to continue UPI through partner banks such as Axis Bank, HDFC Bank, SBI and Yes Bank.

That means scanning QR codes, paying merchants, sending money and receiving UPI payments through Paytm can continue. Paytm also told stock exchanges that the Paytm app, Paytm UPI, Paytm Gold, QR, Soundbox, card machines, Payment Gateway and Paytm Money will keep operating without interruption.

What May Change In Your UPI Handle

Some users may see changes in their UPI ID handle if they were still using old Paytm-linked handles. Paytm has already been moving users to partner-bank supported handles. Users should approve only official in-app prompts and avoid links sent on SMS, WhatsApp or unknown calls.

What Happens To Wallet, FASTag And Bank Balance?

Old Paytm Payments Bank customers can withdraw available balances from bank accounts or wallets, but they cannot add fresh money to the bank account or wallet after the earlier RBI deadline. Paytm Payments Bank’s own website says existing balances remain safe and withdrawals are allowed.

Users with old FASTags, NCMC cards or linked automatic payments should check whether those services have already moved to another bank. Any pending balance should be withdrawn through official Paytm channels only.

What Users Should Do Now

Open the Paytm app and check your UPI ID, linked bank account and default payment method. If your UPI payment links to a normal bank account, it should work. If anything still shows Paytm Payments Bank, shift it to another bank account.

Do not share OTP, screen-share access or card details with callers claiming to “restore Paytm”. Big regulatory news often attracts fraud messages. Use only the Paytm app, RBI website or official company disclosures for updates.
