What Is The Prime Minister Research Chair PMRC Scheme 2026?
The Prime Minister Research Chair PMRC Scheme 2026 is a Central Sector Scheme of the Department of Higher Education under the Ministry of Education. It aims to attract leading Indian-origin researchers, scientists, and professionals from abroad and place them at premier government higher education institutions and national research laboratories in India.
The scheme is built around three pillars: Lead Institutions, Host Institutions, and PMRC Fellows. Lead Institutions will guide research direction in specific thematic areas, while Host Institutions will provide laboratories, research support, infrastructure, academic collaboration, and industry linkages. PMRC Fellows will work on approved research, development, and innovation projects in India.
The scheme has three engagement categories.
- Young Research Fellows are meant for early-career researchers or professionals with up to five years of post-PhD experience outside India.Â
- Senior Fellows are for mid-career researchers or professionals with five to less than ten years of post-PhD experience outside India.Â
- Research Chairs are for eminent researchers or professionals with ten years or more of post-PhD experience outside India.
Financial support is also a major attraction. The official call mentions annual fellowship fees, one-time research grants, relocation benefits, residential and medical allowance, and operational cost or institutional overheads. Depending on the category, research grants can go from ₹1 crore to ₹5 crore, while fellowship fee support and other benefits are separate.
