Relief Operation Grows Across 26 Districts
The state’s flood response is now spread across Ayodhya, Azamgarh, Bahraich, Badaun, Ballia, Barabanki, Basti, Chandauli, Farrukhabad, Ghazipur, Gonda, Gorakhpur, Hardoi, Kasganj, Kanpur Nagar, Lakhimpur Kheri, Mirzapur, Moradabad, Prayagraj, Rae Bareli, Sant Kabir Nagar, Rampur, Sitapur, Shahjahanpur, Unnao and Varanasi.
The September 8 statewide relief tally shows the scale of field operations:
- 19,496 people have been shifted to safer locations, including roughly 6,000 on Monday.
- Authorities have opened 1,634 relief posts and 1,315 shelters across affected districts.
- As many as 2,161 boats and motorboats are deployed, alongside 1,072 medical teams.
- More than 6.83 lakh meal packets and 1.11 lakh relief kits have been distributed.
- Teams have supplied 6.68 lakh chlorine tablets and 2.60 lakh ORS packets for health protection.
Housing damage is also mounting. Officials recorded 1,490 damaged houses, while assistance had been provided in 1,272 cases. The relief push follows weekend inspections in districts including Chitrakoot and Varanasi, where the Uttar Pradesh government has publicised rescue, survey and material-distribution work.

River Belts Still Above The Danger Mark
Barabanki, Ballia And Shahjahanpur Face The Closest Watch
Barabanki remains one of the clearest danger zones. The Saryu was reported 47 centimetres above the danger level on Tuesday, affecting around 60 villages across three tehsils. Madraha, Ballipur, Parvatpur, Subedarpurwa, Kotari Gauria, Chausipurwa and Gayghat are among the settlements named in local reporting. Erosion has also been reported at several points, adding pressure on homes, farmland and access routes.
In Ballia, late-Monday reporting said the Ganga remained above danger level while the Saryu continued to rise. Around 84 villages and roughly 71,000 people were reported affected. The district remains important because both major river systems can keep low-lying settlements waterlogged even when rainfall briefly eases.
Shahjahanpur added another warning point on Tuesday. The Ramganga was 19 centimetres above danger level, while the Ganga was 25 centimetres below its danger mark. More than a dozen villages were reported inundated, with standing crops spread across thousands of hectares affected by floodwater. By contrast, Moradabad’s Ramganga was reported below its danger level, though low-lying areas still faced waterlogging.
Fresh Rain Keeps Eastern Uttar Pradesh On Watch
The India Meteorological Department has forecast heavy rainfall over East Uttar Pradesh through September 9. That keeps the eastern river belt vulnerable because river levels do not respond only to rainfall at the exact location. Runoff from upstream catchments, releases from barrages and rainfall in adjoining regions can keep water moving downstream for hours or days.
Relief conditions vary by district. In Varanasi, the Ganga was slowly receding on Monday, yet 2,703 people from 594 families were still in camps. The river stood at 69.61 metres, below its 70.26-metre warning level, but backflow continued to maroon some low-lying neighbourhoods. A falling gauge can still leave drainage and access problems behind for days.
Residents in flood-prone villages should follow district evacuation notices, avoid flooded roads and riverbanks, and not attempt to cross fast-moving water. Drinking-water safety is another concern after inundation, which explains the large distribution of chlorine tablets and ORS packets.
