Centre Asks Ola, Uber And Rapido To Remove Advance Tipping Prompts: Will Passengers Now Be Asked To Tip Only After Completing A Ride?

India’s ride-hailing apps are being pushed to change when they ask passengers for tips. The Centre has directed cab and bike-taxi aggregators to stop showing advance tipping prompts before a ride is booked or completed, after regulators said such prompts could mislead passengers into believing that paying extra may improve ride acceptance.

Consumer Affairs Secretary Nidhi Khare said tipping must remain voluntary and should be left to passengers after the ride. The move follows a ₹10 lakh CCPA penalty on Rapido and a wider examination of major ride-hailing platforms.

That means the change is about timing, not removing a driver’s chance to receive extra money for a good trip.

What Exactly Has The Centre Ordered?

The latest action follows the government’s scrutiny of pre-ride tipping and app interfaces used by companies such as Ola, Uber and Rapido. Khare said the National Consumer Helpline had received many complaints about cab aggregators, while the Central Consumer Protection Authority was examining how passengers were being prompted to pay additional amounts.

The official PIB release on the Rapido case said the CCPA found prompts that could steer riders towards paying more while a booking was still being processed. The regulator classified parts of the interface as “Confirm Shaming” and “Interface Interference”, two types of dark patterns.

Key Highlights

  • Advance tip prompts should not appear before booking, before a journey starts or during a ride.
  • A voluntary tipping option can be shown after the journey has been completed.
  • The full tip amount should go to the driver without an aggregator deduction.
  • Rapido was fined ₹10 lakh, while the examination of Ola and Uber was still continuing.

Why Did Advance Tipping Trigger Government Action?

The issue went beyond a simple optional tip button. Regulators focused on prompts appearing while users were trying to secure a ride. Rapido, for example, displayed messages suggesting that paying a higher amount could improve the chance of getting a captain. The CCPA said Rapido had not produced data showing that paying extra actually increased a rider’s likelihood of securing a ride.

A passenger seeing a message linking extra payment with quicker acceptance may feel pushed to pay before receiving the service. The CCPA said a tip is ordinarily a voluntary payment made after the service, rather than an unofficial condition attached to getting a ride.

The action also connects with the government’s wider push against manipulative online designs. The Department of Consumer Affairs publishes India’s Guidelines for Prevention and Regulation of Dark Patterns, 2023, which cover digital interfaces designed to steer consumers towards choices they may not otherwise make.

Will Passengers Now Be Asked To Tip Only After Completing A Ride?

Yes. That is what the current rule requires. Clause 14.15 of the Motor Vehicle Aggregator Guidelines allows an app to provide a voluntary tipping feature, but it should become visible only after the journey ends. It should not appear while booking, before departure or during the trip.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways had already issued directions in August 2026 asking aggregators to remove pre-ride prompts suggesting that an extra payment could improve ride confirmation, driver acceptance, allocation, waiting time or service quality. The September action therefore follows an instruction already issued to the sector.

For passengers, the change separates the quoted fare from the later decision to reward a driver. Drivers can still receive tips after service completion, and the guidelines state that the entire tip should reach the driver without deduction by the aggregator.

What Changes Next For Ola, Uber, Rapido And Passengers?

The next test is app compliance. Rapido has already faced a monetary penalty, while the CCPA examination of Ola and Uber was continuing when the September action was announced. Ride-hailing companies may need to redesign booking screens and remove wording that connects additional payments with securing a ride.

Passengers should still check the displayed fare, cancellation conditions, and optional add-ons before booking. The action does not abolish dynamic pricing itself. Instead, regulators are separately examining pricing and app designs that may steer riders towards paying more during the booking process.
