An overseas college’s admission decision does not settle whether you can later register to practise medicine in India. Verify the course, clinical training, and local licensing rights separately.
For students planning MBBS abroad, NMC does not endorse a list of foreign medical colleges. A university brochure claiming “NMC approval” is insufficient evidence.
Key Highlights
- Verify the exact programme and campus with the host-country regulator.
- A WDOMS listing cannot confirm accreditation or eligibility to register in India.
- Confirm the study and internship timetable, along with graduates’ local licensing rights.
Medical College Recognition: Which Records Count?
Match the institution’s legal name, campus, and degree-awarding university to the admission offer. Verify the specific medical programme with the country’s competent regulator.
NMC’s general information page advises applicants to obtain course and fee details directly from the institution. The World Directory of Medical Schools also warns that listing does not establish recognition, accreditation or endorsement.
Use each record for a different check:
| Evidence | What to Verify |
| Host-country regulator | Approval of the named programme and campus |
| University documents | Curriculum, duration and internship arrangements |
| WDOMS entry | School and programme information, not accreditation |
| NMC regulations | Conditions governing registration in India |
General university recognition does not settle every question about its medical programme. The course offered to international students needs its own scrutiny.
NMC Requirements for MBBS Abroad
For new entrants covered by the Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations, 2021, the requirements include:
- At least 54 months of medical study.
- A separate internship of at least 12 months at the same foreign medical institution.
- English as the teaching medium.
- Mandatory subjects and clinical training specified in Schedule I.
- Registration or licensing in the awarding country on terms equivalent to those for its citizens.
The regulations require the course, training and foreign internship to remain within the same foreign institution and country. They also set a ten-year completion limit from joining.
A package promising part of the foreign clinical training in India or another country needs particular caution. The later Indian internship requirement does not permit relocating the foreign training.
NMC’s 1 April 2026 alert concerning Uzbekistan admissions warned that deviations in course duration, clinical training or internship arrangements could prevent Indian registration.
Degree Validity Also Depends on Local Licensing Rights
Permission to enrol and permission to practise medicine are different questions. Ask the host-country regulator whether an Indian graduate of that exact programme can obtain the required professional registration.
The distinction appeared in the Indian Embassy in Manila’s 17 June 2026 advisory. It recorded that clarification on reciprocity affecting foreign graduates’ access to the Philippine Physician Licensure Examination was awaited.
That was not a blanket approval or rejection of Philippine colleges. Applicants need the latest official position for their programme and nationality.
NEET is another separate check. NMC requires Indian citizens and OCI applicants on the applicable overseas admission route to qualify NEET. The result serves as the eligibility certificate, subject to prescribed admission criteria, and remains valid for three years from declaration.
Documents to Obtain and the Route Back to India
Before paying, request documents directly from the institution:
- Admission letter naming the programme and campus.
- Academic calendar separating study from internship.
- Curriculum, clinical placement details and teaching-medium confirmation.
- Written fees, refund terms and licensing information.
Retain official replies. Any claimed exception needs support from the relevant NMC notification, rather than an agent’s assurance.
Current NMC guidance describes the usual route through FMGE, State Medical Council provisional registration and the applicable compulsory rotating medical internship. The 2021 regulations require at least 12 months of supervised internship in India before permanent registration, alongside the other conditions.
For disrupted training, NMC’s 8 June 2026 FAQs explain documentary assessment of compensatory physical training. They do not grant a general relaxation for new admissions.
Assess an MBBS abroad offer against the full registration pathway. Send unresolved course or licensing questions to the relevant regulator before accepting the seat.
FAQs
Does NMC publish an approved foreign medical college list?
No. NMC says it does not endorse a list of foreign medical institutions. Verify the specific college, programme, and licensing conditions rather than trusting an agent’s label.
Is WDOMS listing enough to confirm degree validity?
No. WDOMS explicitly states that listing does not establish recognition, accreditation or endorsement. Confirm local programme approval with the host-country regulator. NMC requirements govern eligibility for Indian registration.
Is NEET compulsory for Indian students studying medicine abroad?
For Indian citizens and OCI applicants, the applicable overseas admission route requires a NEET pass. Eligibility conditions still apply, and validity lasts three years from result declaration.
Can the Indian internship replace the foreign internship?
The 2021 regulations require both: at least 12 months at the same foreign institution and at least 12 months of supervised internship in India. Neither replaces the other.
Does passing FMGE guarantee permanent registration in India?
An FMGE pass is one stage. Provisional registration and the applicable internship follow, and permanent registration is granted only after all relevant conditions have been met.
