Festival travel in India can turn a routine ticket search into a race against a fast-moving waitlist. Central Railway has announced 418 special services for Puja, Diwali and Chhath, while North Central Railway has published 1,053 festival-special trips across 43 train pairs.
Indian Railways said in September 2026 that its Passenger Reservation System serves more than 20.5 lakh passengers daily. For travellers heading home around Diwali or Chhath, knowing when a special train opens for reservation can be as important as knowing its train number.
Key Highlights
- The normal Advance Reservation Period is 60 days, excluding the journey date, but a festival special may open later if notified closer to travel.
- Since 1 October 2025, only Aadhaar-authenticated users can book general reserved tickets online during the first 15 minutes after reservation opens.
- Confirmed Tatkal tickets generally receive no refund on voluntary cancellation; ordinary confirmed tickets follow timed deductions.
Why Festival Special Train Availability Can Change Quickly
Festival specials are added when regular trains cannot absorb seasonal demand. In 2025-26, Indian Railways operated about 74,800 special-train trips up to February 2026 for festivals and vacation periods.
Eastern Railway, for example, has announced 29 festival-special trains accounting for 598 trips between October and November 2026. Central Railway additions include Mumbai connections towards Gorakhpur, Chennai, Bengaluru and other high-demand destinations.
Do not assume every special becomes bookable exactly 60 days before departure. The 60-day rule sets the normal window; a newly notified special can enter the system later. Recheck the train number, date and boarding station before relying on an older waitlist.
How to Book a Festival Special Train on IRCTC
Booking follows the normal reserved-ticket flow, but opening dates deserve extra attention.
- Log in to the official IRCTC website or Rail Connect app and enter the origin, destination and journey date.
- Look for “Special”, “Festival Special” or the newly announced train number, then compare Sleeper and AC availability.
- Select the quota, add passenger details, confirm the boarding station and pay after checking the exact running date.
- Save the PNR and monitor status through IRCTC or official railway enquiry services.
For opening-day general reservation, online booking during the first 15 minutes is restricted to Aadhaar-authenticated IRCTC users. Tatkal is tighter: only Aadhaar-authenticated users can book online, with OTP-based verification used to curb misuse.
A March 2026 official Ministry of Railways X post also highlighted action against fake accounts. Government data showed 3.04 crore user accounts were deactivated during 2025 for fake or malicious IDs.
Ticket Availability, Tatkal And Checks Before Paying
A “special” label does not guarantee easy availability. Popular sectors towards Bihar, eastern Uttar Pradesh and major metros can fill rapidly around Diwali and Chhath.
Check these before paying:
- Search nearby terminals: A train may originate from Anand Vihar, Hazrat Nizamuddin, Bandra Terminus, or another city terminal.
- Compare classes: Sleeper may have a long waitlist while 3A or 3E still has seats.
- Recheck new announcements: Railways adds services as demand develops, so yesterday’s search may not show every later option.
Tatkal opens one day before departure from the train’s originating station: 10:00 am for AC classes and 11:00 am for non-AC classes. A maximum of four passengers can be booked on a Tatkal e-ticket. Festival specials do not automatically carry Tatkal quota, so check the specific train and class.
Cancellation Rules, Refunds And Festival Travel FAQs
For an ordinary confirmed e-ticket cancelled more than 48 hours before departure, the current flat deduction is ₹240 for 1A/Executive, ₹200 for 2A/First Class, ₹180 for 3A/3E/AC Chair Car, ₹120 for Sleeper and ₹60 for Second Class, per passenger.
Between 48 and 12 hours before departure, 25% of fare is deducted subject to the minimum charge. From 12 hours to four hours before departure, it rises to 50%. Fully waitlisted e-tickets remaining waitlisted after chart preparation are dropped from the chart and refunded after clerkage. If the train is cancelled, confirmed and RAC e-tickets receive an automatic full refund.
FAQs
1. Can Festival Special Trains Be Booked On The IRCTC App?
Yes. Reserved festival special trains can generally be booked online through the IRCTC website or app once Railways notifies the service and opens its reservation.
2. Does Every Festival Special Follow The 60-Day Booking Window?
No. Sixty days is the normal advance reservation period, but newly announced festival specials may open later depending on when schedules enter the reservation system.
3. Can Passengers Book Tatkal On Festival Special Trains?
Only when Tatkal quota is offered for that train, class and journey. Travellers should check availability because every festival special does not automatically provide Tatkal seats.
4. What Happens If A Festival Special Remains Fully Waitlisted?
For a fully waitlisted e-ticket after chart preparation, passenger names are removed from the chart and the fare is refunded electronically after applicable clerkage deductions.
5. Is A Confirmed Tatkal Ticket Refundable After Cancellation?
Confirmed Tatkal tickets normally receive no refund on voluntary cancellation. Different rules can apply when Railways cancels the train or qualifying circumstances permit a refund.
