India’s Kavach 4.0 rollout has entered South Central Railway for the first time. On September 23, 2026, Indian Railways commissioned the upgraded Automatic Train Protection system across 108 route kilometres between Malkajgiri and Kamareddi in Telangana’s Hyderabad Division. The Ministry of Railways’ announcement confirmed the upgrade from Kavach Version 3.2 to Version 4.0.
The move stands out because South Central Railway was an early operating ground for Kavach 3.2. Indian Railways says experience gathered across 1,465 route km on the zone helped shape Version 4.0. Meanwhile, fresh Kavach projects in Lucknow and Moradabad indicate that deployment is spreading beyond the first high-density corridors.
What Changed On The Malkajgiri-Kamareddi Route?
The 108 km route section has moved from Kavach 3.2 to Kavach 4.0. The newer version brings better location accuracy, improved signal information in large yards, station-to-station communication through optical fiber, and direct integration with existing electronic interlocking.
Kavach assists loco pilots in keeping trains within prescribed speeds and can automatically apply brakes when required. It is designed to reduce risks from Signal Passing at Danger, commonly called SPAD, and train collisions. Indian Railways also classifies Kavach as a technology-intensive system requiring Safety Integrity Level-4 certification.
The Ministry of Railways also shared the commissioning through its official X post on September 23, calling the development a new boost to rail safety.
Is The Kavach 4.0 Rollout Actually Getting Faster?
The available 2026 figures show a sharp rise in commissioned coverage, although approved projects still require installation, testing and certification before trains can use them.
Indian Railways had reported 1,452 route km of Kavach 4.0 commissioned by March 11. By July 31, commissioned coverage had climbed to 2,633 route km across the Delhi-Mumbai and Delhi-Howrah corridors.
Another major jump came on January 30, when 472.3 route km across three sections were commissioned in one day. Railways described that as its highest-ever single-day Kavach commissioning.
The pipeline is widening too. On September 19, Railways approved ₹252 crore for 607.7 route km in Lucknow Division. Earlier, it cleared ₹170 crore for 712 route km in Moradabad Division.
What Makes Kavach 4.0 Different From Earlier Versions?
Version 4.0 is designed for denser traffic, bigger yards and closer integration with railway signalling infrastructure. Its main upgrades include:
- More accurate train location information for tighter movement supervision.
- Better handling of signal information inside large railway yards.
- Station-to-station Kavach communication through optical fibre cable.
- Direct integration with existing electronic interlocking systems.
- Automatic speed supervision and braking when operating limits are breached.
Kavach does not replace every railway safety layer. It works alongside signalling, interlocking, tracks, telecom infrastructure and trained operating staff. Deployment also requires station equipment, RFID tags along tracks, telecom towers, optical fibre and compatible onboard locomotive equipment.
This infrastructure requirement explains why approval and commissioning figures differ. A sanctioned route does not become Kavach-operational immediately after funds are cleared.
What Comes Next For India’s Train Protection Programme?
The South Central Railway launch indicates a broader phase for Kavach 4.0. Deployment is no longer limited to fresh installations on Delhi-Mumbai and Delhi-Howrah. Railways is now upgrading older Kavach territory while sanctioning projects across additional divisions.
By July 31, Indian Railways reported 11,547 km of optical fibre, 1,721 telecom towers, 1,009 station data centres and Kavach equipment on 6,290 locomotives. Trackside implementation was underway across 21,794 route km.
Railways has also successfully conducted Kavach trials at 160 kmph with a Vande Bharat trainset on the Chipyana Buzurg-Tundla section.
So, the 2026 numbers point toward faster expansion. Still, commissioned route kilometers remain the stronger indicator than project approvals alone. Malkajgiri-Kamareddi shows that Kavach 4.0 is now growing through both new installations and upgrades to earlier Kavach networks.
