Why The September Launch Is Being Watched Closely

PSLV-C62 was carrying EOS-N1, also known as Anvesha, along with 15 co-passenger satellites. On its official PSLV-C62 mission page, ISRO said the rocket encountered an anomaly near the end of the PS3 stage and began a detailed analysis. A national-level expert committee was later tasked with reviewing the failure and recommending corrective action.

The setback drew extra attention because PSLV-C61 had also failed in May 2025 after trouble in its third stage. ISRO’s 2025-26 annual report says a modified HPS3 motor was developed after C61 and successfully static-tested twice, in October and November 2025. C62 then suffered another PS3-stage anomaly in January.

That sequence puts the September flight under heavier scrutiny than a routine mission. Still, the distinction between the rockets is important. A successful GSLV-F17 launch will show that ISRO can restart its broader launch programme, but it will not by itself prove that the PSLV issue has been fixed. The government told Parliament in April that PSLV would return after corrective actions were implemented.

GISAT-1A therefore arrives at an awkward but important moment. A successful mission would restart ISRO’s launch calendar and put a major Earth-observation spacecraft into service.

What GISAT-1A Is Expected To Do From Space

GISAT-1A is a GEO-imaging satellite designed to operate from geostationary orbit. Instead of repeatedly passing over India like many low-Earth-orbit remote-sensing satellites, a geostationary platform can keep the Indian region in view for long periods. ISRO has listed EOS-05 as the spacecraft for GSLV-F17.

That makes frequent imaging the main attraction. The original GISAT programme described by the Department of Space was designed to provide sector-level images every five minutes and a full Indian landmass image every 30 minutes under cloud-free conditions. GISAT-1A is reported to carry improvements over the spacecraft lost in 2021.

Its most useful roles are likely to include:

Used together, frequent GEO imagery and radar observations can provide different types of information during floods, crop assessments, and terrain changes.

For disaster managers, that timing can help during a cyclone landfall or fast-spreading flood, when conditions change between ordinary satellite passes. Agriculture teams can also compare vegetation and crop patterns more often instead of waiting days for another suitable observation.

Why GISAT-1A Has A Bigger History Behind It

The mission also carries unfinished business from 2021. GISAT-1, later designated EOS-03, was launched aboard GSLV-F10 on August 12 that year. The first stages performed normally, but the cryogenic upper stage failed, and the mission was lost.

ISRO’s GSLV-F10 failure analysis later traced the problem to abnormal liquid-hydrogen tank pressure, most likely linked to leakage in a vent and relief valve. Corrective changes were recommended for later GSLV missions. GISAT-1A now gives India another opportunity to place this type of high-frequency GEO imaging satellite in orbit.

There is another timely angle. NVS-03, the next NavIC satellite, has also been waiting at Sriharikota after launch plans slowed. Reports say both strategically important spacecraft received government clearance. If GISAT-1A flies successfully, it could open the way for a busier run of missions after the seven-month gap.
