Supreme Court Extends TET Qualification Deadline For Teachers: New Cut-Off Date, Exemption Rules, And Steps To Protect Your Job

India’s Supreme Court has given in-service teachers extra time to clear the Teacher Eligibility Test, but it has not diluted the rule itself. In its 29 May 2026 review judgment, the court extended the deadline from 31 August 2027 to 31 August 2028, directed states to hold TET preferably twice a year, and said no further extension request will be entertained.

This comes as a big relief for teachers already working in schools, especially those appointed before the Right to Education framework tightened qualification rules. But the message is also firm: TET remains compulsory for many in-service teachers who want to continue or move up. Even The Hindu’s official X update flagged the same shift after the ruling.

What The Supreme Court Changed

The biggest update is the new final date. Teachers covered by the ruling now have time till 31 August 2028 to obtain TET instead of the earlier 31 August 2027. The bench also said states and competent authorities should conduct TET periodically, preferably twice every year, with around six months between exams.

The review petitions were otherwise dismissed. That means the court did not reopen the core rule making TET mandatory for covered in-service teachers. It only gave one more year, so schools and teachers get workable breathing room.

Who Gets Relief And Who Does Not

The relief is not a blanket exemption. The earlier 1 September 2025 judgment had already created two categories. Teachers with less than five years of service left as on that date may continue till superannuation without clearing TET. But if they want promotion, TET is still required.

Teachers recruited before the RTE Act and having more than five years left to retire must clear TET to continue in service. That earlier two-year window has now effectively become a three-year window ending on 31 August 2028. If they fail, the judgment says they may have to quit service and can be compulsorily retired, subject to terminal benefit rules.

No Blanket Pre-2010 Escape

One major argument in review was that the NCTE’s 23 August 2010 notification had exempted some already appointed teachers from minimum qualifications, including TET. The court recorded that plea but still dismissed the petitions except for extending the time. So there is no fresh universal exemption for all pre-2010 appointees.

Why This Order Is A Big Deal For Teachers

This ruling affects a large pool of teachers in government, aided, and other non-minority school setups covered by the court’s 2025 judgment. The judges said educational quality cannot be compromised, but they also recognised that a sudden cut-off could disrupt schools and children’s learning. That is why the court used its powers to extend the deadline by one year.

For teachers, this is relief with pressure attached. The extra year can save jobs, but only if candidates use the new window properly. Since the court has clearly said no further extension prayer will be entertained, delay now becomes risky.

Action Steps To Save Your Teaching Job

First, check your service position: how many years are left before retirement on 1 September 2025? That decides whether you fall in the exempt-superannuation category or the must-clear-TET category.

Second, track your state TET calendar closely. The Supreme Court wants exams held preferably twice yearly, and NCTE remains the key statutory body on teacher qualification norms.

Third, keep records ready now: appointment order, service book details, school approval papers, and any promotion-related documents. Finally, do not bank on another court rescue. As of now, 31 August 2028 is the line that can decide continuation for many teachers.
