ISRO-Backed National Space Technology Conclave Begins Today: What Future Indian Missions Will Scientists And Startups Discuss?

India’s next space projects are moving from plans into hardware tests, new launch systems and deeper private-sector participation. Against that backdrop, the National Space Technology Conclave 2026 begins at Chandigarh University today, August 17, bringing scientists, mission leaders, startups, students and policymakers together for two days of technical talks and roundtables.

The event is part of National Space Day 2026 celebrations. Its theme, “Emerging Space Technologies for India’s Future Space Missions”, gives the programme a forward-looking focus. The official schedule lists small satellites, advanced payloads, launch technology, artificial intelligence, remote sensing, ground systems, space economics and university-industry collaboration.

What Is The National Space Technology Conclave 2026 About?

The conclave is hosted by Chandigarh University’s Kalpana Chawla Centre for Research in Space Science and Technology, with participation from ISRO, IIST, IN-SPACe, NSIL, UR Rao Satellite Centre, industry and startups. Organisers say 25 to 30 senior national delegates are expected, while the wider programme includes around 30 scientists and mission experts plus industry leaders.

Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla is listed as Special Guest. His appearance gives the meeting a timely human-spaceflight link after his 2025 Axiom-4 mission to the International Space Station, where he took part in Indian microgravity experiments.

The first day includes leadership talks, expert sessions and a national strategic roundtable. Day two shifts towards startup-industry discussions, student demonstrations, technical mentoring and brainstorming on small satellite laboratories, payload development, ground stations, AI and research funding.

Chandigarh University has also promoted the conclave through its official X account, highlighting its five roundtables and technology demonstrations.

Which Future Indian Space Missions Could Shape The Discussions?

The organisers have not published a session-by-session list naming every future mission. Still, several approved or developing ISRO programmes closely match the technologies on the agenda.

  • Gaganyaan is an obvious link because the conclave covers human spaceflight, mission systems and launch technologies. ISRO completed another major parachute qualification test in July 2026 and reported Crew Module qualification work covering flotation, umbilical separation and structural loads.
  • Chandrayaan-4 fits the payload, docking and planetary-science tracks. ISRO says the lunar sample-return mission is planned for the 2027-28 timeframe and will require technologies for sampling, storage, transfer, rendezvous and docking. The approved Chandrayaan-5/LUPEX mission with JAXA will explore lunar volatiles near south-polar shadowed regions.
  • The Venus Orbiter Mission connects directly with advanced scientific payloads, deep-space operations and planetary science. ISRO has said the mission is planned for March 2028 and will study the Venusian atmosphere, clouds, aerosols, ionosphere, solar-wind interaction, and the surface.
  • Bharatiya Antariksh Station and later crewed lunar plans are relevant to robotics, docking, microgravity research, life-support systems and reusable access to orbit. ISRO’s roadmap targets an operational Indian space station by 2035 and an Indian crewed lunar mission by 2040.

Next-generation launch vehicles are also likely to feature. ISRO is developing LOX-methane propulsion for future launchers, while the conclave agenda explicitly includes reusable launch vehicle technologies, propulsion and space-access systems.

Why Are Startups A Bigger Part Of India’s Space Plans Now?

The timing is striking. On July 18, 2026, Skyroot Aerospace’s Vikram-I became the first privately developed Indian rocket to conduct an orbital launch from Indian soil, according to ISRO. That achievement moved private launch capability from promise to operation and gives startup discussions at the conclave more weight.

The event also arrives just days after the Bharatiya Antariksh Hackathon 2026 finale. ISRO said more than 100,000 students registered and 15,104 teams submitted solutions across geospatial technology, space science, image processing and AI or machine learning.

For startups, the opportunities extend beyond rockets. Small-satellite buses, Earth-observation analytics, onboard AI, propulsion, ground software, telemetry, robotics, materials and payload electronics all appear in the conclave’s technical themes. IN-SPACe and NSIL participation also brings regulation, commercialisation, launch access and technology transfer into the same room as researchers and founders.

What Could Come Out Of The Two-Day Conclave?

One planned outcome is the “Chandigarh Declaration on Emerging Space Tech 2026”, expected to outline how universities can support India’s space roadmap through research, skilled manpower, laboratories, payload development and industry partnerships.

The organisers also expect working groups and roadmaps for small satellite laboratories, a proposed CU-SAT mission, ground-station capability and scientific payloads. That makes the conclave more than speeches. It is designed to connect student research and academic facilities with national agencies and commercial space companies.

Gaganyaan needs tested human-rated systems. Chandrayaan-4 needs docking and sample-return technologies. Venus exploration needs advanced instruments and deep-space operations. BAS will require sustained microgravity research, robotics and orbital infrastructure. The conclave brings many of those technical threads into one programme.
