Defence engineering is moving quickly too. IAF Dronathon 2026 is being held at Pokhran from September 14 to 16, featuring surveillance drones, counter-drone systems, autonomous operations, swarm technologies and electronic warfare. These roles bring electronics, software, communications, control systems and mechanical design together.

The new profile is not about mastering every emerging technology. Strong fundamentals still count, but engineers increasingly need coding literacy, data skills, electronics awareness, cyber security basics, simulation tools, systems engineering and practical testing experience.

For students, projects can show applied skill better than another certificate. Building a robot, designing a chip, testing an AI model, working with sensors or contributing to an open-source engineering project can demonstrate what a candidate can actually build.
