Could BRICS Turn The Idea Into A Faster Outbreak Shield?
Yes, but only if the project becomes operational rather than ceremonial. The strongest version would connect national public-health institutes, laboratories, genomic teams and One Health networks under agreed triggers for rapid notification.
It should complement WHO and the International Health Regulations, not create a separate political lane for disease reporting. BRICS has already reaffirmed WHO’s coordinating role.
Several BRICS members have large populations, busy travel corridors and major research systems. Connecting those capabilities could shorten the distance between the first unusual sample and an international warning.
Speed, however, will come from practical details: compatible data, trained staff, protected channels, regular drills and a willingness to report bad news early.
