India’s space calendar is suddenly getting crowded again. At the third National Space Day celebrations in Ahmedabad on August 23, 2026, ISRO Chairman V. Narayanan said the agency is targeting eight launch-vehicle missions and plans to realise 12 satellites during FY 2026-27. The biggest headline, however, is Gaganyaan. ISRO expects its first uncrewed Gaganyaan flight within the next four months after completing around 8,000 tests for the programme.
The announcement comes at an unusual point for ISRO. Its launch activity has been quiet through much of 2026 after the PSLV-C62/EOS-N1 mission failed in January. Now, Earth observation, navigation, human spaceflight and communication missions are lining up for the months ahead.
Why Is ISRO Planning Eight Launch-Vehicle Missions This Financial Year?
Narayanan’s new target covers a broad mix of work rather than one type of satellite. The coming flights are expected to support Earth observation, navigation, communications and technology development, while Gaganyaan moves India closer to an indigenous human spaceflight.
A few numbers show how busy the programme could become:
- 8 launch-vehicle missions are targeted in the current financial year.
- 12 satellites are planned to be realised during the same period.

That last figure also explains why ISRO is speaking more often about private participation. India now has about 440 space start-ups, according to Narayanan, and launch capacity will have to grow if the country wants a much larger satellite fleet.
Which Indian Space Missions Are Expected To Launch Next?
The most immediate mission is expected to be GISAT-1A, also known as EOS-05. According to the latest GISAT-1A launch update, the Earth-observation satellite is heading for launch in the first week of September 2026 on a GSLV. It is designed for frequent imaging of the Indian landmass and can support disaster monitoring, agriculture, forestry, and other observation needs.
After GISAT-1A, NVS-03 is expected to be a major priority. The satellite belongs to the second-generation NavIC constellation. Recent reports place its launch around November, although launch dates can still move. NVS-03 is especially important because India is working to strengthen its indigenous positioning, navigation, and timing network.
Several missions that appeared on earlier official manifests also remain relevant. A Department of Space parliamentary reply on upcoming missions listed TDS-01, EOS-10 or Oceansat-3A, and the first Gaganyaan uncrewed mission among major upcoming flights. TDS-01 is meant to validate technologies such as electric propulsion, an indigenous travelling-wave-tube amplifier and quantum key distribution. EOS-10 is intended for oceanographic, meteorological and land applications.
NSIL’s GSAT-N3 is another spacecraft to watch. The ISRO annual report says the 4,500-kg S-band communication satellite is proposed for launch in the fourth quarter of 2026 and is intended for Indian government users.
Beyond this financial-year push, Chandrayaan-4 and the Venus Orbiter Mission remain major approved programmes. Chandrayaan-4 is designed as a lunar sample-return mission, while the Venus mission will study the planet’s surface and atmosphere.
Why Gaganyaan G1 Is The Mission Everyone Will Watch
Gaganyaan G1 will carry no astronauts, but it will test the chain of systems needed before people fly. ISRO has already completed major Crew Module qualification work, including flotation, separation, and structural tests. Its July 2026 Gaganyaan qualification update also detailed recent work on systems meant to protect the module and crew during later flights.
ISRO has also tested the main parachute system used to slow the Crew Module before splashdown. The first uncrewed flight will test the Human Rated LVM3, Orbital Module operations, re-entry and Crew Module recovery. ISRO’s annual report says G1, G2 and G3 are planned as uncrewed missions before the crewed H1 flight.
National Space Day also brought fresh attention to Chandrayaan-3. Union Minister Jitendra Singh marked the occasion in an official X post on National Space Day, recalling the Moon landing that led to August 23 being observed as National Space Day.
Why Has ISRO’s 2026 Launch Calendar Become So Important?
The next successful launch will carry extra weight because ISRO is coming off two consecutive PSLV setbacks. PSLV-C61 carrying EOS-09 failed in May 2025 after a third-stage anomaly. PSLV-C62 carrying EOS-N1 then encountered another anomaly near the end of its PS3 stage in January 2026.
ISRO says a national-level expert committee is reviewing the PSLV issue, while reports indicate additional ground tests are required before the rocket returns. That means the immediate restart is expected to come through GSLV with GISAT-1A rather than PSLV.
A strong run from September onward would do more than fill a launch calendar. It could restore operational momentum, strengthen NavIC, advance Gaganyaan and push India’s commercial space plans forward at the same time.
