What Are Freeze and Float Options in NEET PG Counselling and Which Should Candidates Choose?

The decision to seek an upgrade affects how a candidate reports after a NEET PG seat allotment. In MCC’s 2026 counselling, freeze means keeping the allotment without seeking upgradation; float allows consideration for a preferred seat after completing the required online process.

The NEET PG freeze vs float decision is now urgent. After releasing the final allotment result dated 24 October, MCC scheduled Round 1 reporting from 26 October to 2 November 2026.

Key Highlights

  • Freeze candidates must report physically to their allotted institute.
  • Float candidates must complete online verification to seek an upgrade.
  • An upgrade is conditional, never guaranteed.

Freeze Vs Float: What Changes After Allotment?

The MCC PG Information Bulletin 2026 separates the routes by both willingness and reporting procedure.

OptionCandidate’s DecisionReporting Route
FreezeRetain the allotted seat without seeking an upgradePhysical reporting and admission formalities
FloatRetain the allotment provisionally while seeking upgradationOnline joining and document verification

Selecting float is only part of the process. The allotted institute must verify the documents before provisional confirmation. A portal selection alone does not complete the admission requirements.

Careers360 also highlighted the reporting routes in its counselling update on X.

These instructions concern MCC counselling. Anyone participating through a state authority needs that authority’s prospectus alongside the MCC rules.

Which Option Fits Your Course Preferences?

Start with the seat itself. Would you accept it if no preferred option became available? That question is more useful than assuming another round will produce a better outcome.

  • Consider freeze when the allotted speciality and institute meet your priorities.
  • Consider float when specific preferred alternatives remain and you accept the upgrade conditions.

For illustration, someone allotted MD Anaesthesiology who still prefers MD General Medicine might consider float. The decision should reflect a genuine preference for the alternative course, rather than pressure to keep trying because others are doing so.

Compare the financial commitment before ranking another institute. Ask about the full course fee, accommodation, and any applicable service bond. A preferred city does not automatically compensate for an unaffordable course.

Write down what would justify moving: a different speciality, a particular training environment or proximity to family. Then remove choices you would regret receiving.

Reporting Deadlines And Document Checks

MCC’s published schedule lists four rounds: Round 1, Round 2, Round 3 and the stray vacancy round. Round 2 results are scheduled for 14 November, with reporting from 16 to 23 November 2026. These dates remain subject to official revision.

For the current round, keep these tasks separate:

  • Save the allotment letter and confirmation of the option submitted.
  • Open each uploaded certificate to check that the text is legible and the personal details are correct.
  • Watch for queries from the verification team and save a record of every response you submit.

Leaving uploads until 2 November reduces the time available to replace a blurred certificate or resolve a category discrepancy. Begin while there is still time to address either problem.

Identify who at the allotted institute handles counselling queries before a problem arises. Keep emails and acknowledgements together, and use official contact details rather than numbers circulated in unofficial groups.

Fee Rules And The Consequences Of An Upgrade

The NBEMS fee clarification states that candidates allotted its accredited seats who choose float need not pay the first-year course fee while awaiting upgradation. Freeze candidates pay directly to the hospital they finally join. This concerns NBEMS seats, rather than a universal fee exemption.

An upgrade also changes the earlier allotment. MCC states that a Round 2 upgrade automatically cancels the Round 1 seat. There is no subsequent choice between both seats.

Treat the preference list as an instruction to allocate. Only include an alternative you would take over the retained seat.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I return to my earlier seat after an upgrade?

No. MCC states that a Round 2 upgrade automatically cancels the Round 1 allotment. Candidates should therefore list only alternatives they genuinely prefer to that seat.

Does float guarantee a better seat?

Choosing float does not reserve a seat in your preferred speciality or institute. Allocation still follows your merit position and submitted choices, subject to seats being available.

What happens if my seat is not upgraded?

A properly retained seat remains available under the applicable rules. Float candidates must complete the required joining steps when physical reporting becomes due, including after Round 3.

Is the NBEMS fee relaxation available for every seat?

The clarification concerns NBEMS-accredited seats. Candidates allotted other MD or MS seats must check their institute’s fee instructions rather than assuming the same payment arrangement applies.

Should I follow MCC rules for state counselling?

State authorities issue their own counselling instructions. Check their rules separately, particularly when moving between an MCC allotment and a state seat or planning to surrender either.
