Five young orangutans found in a coastal forest in Odisha have turned an unusual wildlife rescue into a suspected trafficking investigation. Residents first noticed the small reddish-brown apes in the Badapai-Ranakatha forest belt early Tuesday morning. Forest personnel reached the site after receiving an alert and identified the animals as orangutans, not local monkeys. Officials said natural migration was effectively ruled out because wild orangutans are confined to Borneo and Sumatra and there is no wildlife corridor linking those islands with India.

Orangutans are protected internationally. The CITES species database lists the Bornean orangutan under Appendix I, where international commercial trade is heavily restricted.
