Agnipath Scheme 2026: Will Agniveers Get Permanent Jobs and Pensions After the New 2-Year Extension?

On November 4, 2026, the Union Cabinet gave the 75% of Agniveers otherwise due to leave after four years an additional two-year engagement, with a route to regular military service.

To enter the regular cadre after the extension under the revised Agnipath Scheme 2026, an Agniveer must be willing to continue and meet the selection criteria. The Defence Ministry announcement does not grant an automatic pension after six years. Longer Agniveer engagement and entry into the regular cadre remain separate stages.

Key Highlights

  • The 25% merit-based route to regular service after four years continues.
  • The remaining 75% can take a two-year engagement based on willingness.
  • Regular enrolment after six years remains subject to selection criteria.
  • The announcement includes higher pay and a larger Seva Nidhi package, along with seniority benefits.

How Does the New Two-Year Extension Work?

The original Agnipath scheme, launched on June 14, 2022, provided a four-year engagement. Up to 25% of each batch could enter the regular cadre; the remaining personnel were expected to leave.

The revised arrangement creates two routes:

GroupRoute Under the Revised Framework
25% selected on meritRegular employment after the initial four years
Remaining 75%Optional two-year engagement, followed by regular enrolment for those willing and meeting selection criteria

An extension offer is therefore different from an appointment as a regular soldier. For the second group, that appointment comes after the additional engagement and the required selection.

Akashvani’s November 5 X update also covers the Cabinet decision.

Will Agniveers Receive a Pension After Six Years?

Six years in uniform does not, by itself, establish entitlement to a service pension.

The original Agnipath terms excluded pension and gratuity benefits for Agniveer engagement. The new Cabinet release announces a pathway to regular service, rather than a pension payable at the end of the extension.

The distinction is:

  • Extended engagement: Personnel continue through an additional Agniveer service period.
  • Regular enrolment: Those entering the regular cadre come under the applicable service terms and retirement rules.

The Department of Ex-Servicemen Welfare lists 15 years of qualifying service as the minimum for the ordinary service pension of personnel below officer rank.

That does not establish how the initial four years or additional two years will be credited under the revised arrangement. The Cabinet announcement mentions seniority benefits but does not explain pension-credit calculations. Seniority and pension qualification must not be treated as interchangeable.

Pay and Seva Nidhi: What Has Been Confirmed?

The second engagement will carry higher remuneration and an enhanced Seva Nidhi package, the Defence Ministry says. Its announcement does not provide a revised salary table or the new settlement amount.

The original scheme described a Seva Nidhi package of approximately ₹11.71 lakh, including interest, after four years. It combined the Agniveer’s contributions with a matching government contribution.

That historical figure is not a confirmed six-year payout. Seva Nidhi is also a one-time package, rather than a monthly pension.

Akashvani’s report on the revised framework confirms the additional engagement and improved benefits. For personal financial planning, the revised contribution and payment instructions are the details that will determine the amount.

What Agniveers Need to Check Next

The Cabinet decision establishes the new pathway. The service instructions will set out the details needed for individual selection and financial planning.

The documents need to answer the following:

  • Selection instructions: Who qualifies, how assessments are conducted and how an Agniveer records willingness to continue.
  • Pay orders: The new pay rates and the calculations used for Seva Nidhi contributions or settlement.
  • Service-credit rules: How seniority and qualifying service will be calculated after regular enrolment.

The scheme continues; it has not been replaced by unconditional permanent recruitment. Avoid treating a headline about absorption as an individual appointment order.

FAQs

Is the two-year extension compulsory for Agniveers?

An Agniveer must be willing to take the additional engagement. It is offered to the remaining 75% after the initial four years, rather than making six-year service compulsory for everyone.

Will every Agniveer automatically get a permanent job?

The revised pathway covers all willing Agniveers who meet selection criteria. Completing the extension alone does not remove those conditions or replace an individual regular-enrolment decision.

Does six years of Agniveer service guarantee a pension?

No automatic service pension after six years was announced. Regular pension eligibility depends on applicable qualifying-service rules, and the revised announcement does not explain service-credit calculations.

What is the new Seva Nidhi amount after the extension?

The Cabinet announcement promises an enhanced package but gives no revised amount. The original four-year figure must not be presented as the confirmed payment after six years.

Has the government discontinued the Agnipath scheme?

No. The Defence Ministry says Agnipath will continue. The change adds another engagement period and a conditional route to regular service for personnel previously expected to leave.
