The Jharkhand student protest entered a sharper phase in Ranchi on Monday, August 10, as thousands of JPSC and JSSC aspirants marched towards the state Assembly over alleged recruitment examination irregularities. What began as a long sit-in and hunger strike has now turned into a major Assembly gherao, with barricades broken, heavy police deployment and fresh political confrontation across the capital. By 12:29 pm, India Today’s live coverage reported that security forces had used water cannons after protesters pushed through barricades. Devendra Nath Mahto, fasting for nine days, joined the march after arriving in an ambulance and was later carried on a stretcher.
What Happened During The Jharkhand Vidhan Sabha March?
The march began from the old Assembly complex in Dhurwa, with students carrying Tricolours, placards and banners. Protesters were heading towards the new Vidhan Sabha building when groups crossed police barricades near the old Assembly area. An ANI video on X showed protesters breaking through a barricade and continuing towards the new Assembly.
The protest entered its 17th day on Monday. More than 1,500 personnel from the RAF, IRB, district police and quick response teams were deployed along the roughly four-kilometre route, while prohibitory orders remained around the Assembly. Many Ranchi schools were also kept closed as a precaution.
The day also carried unusual political symbolism. The march coincided with Chief Minister Hemant Soren’s 51st birthday. Mahto, despite reported weight loss during his fast, joined protesters while carrying a portrait of former Chief Minister Shibu Soren.
Police officials said barricades had been placed ahead of marchers and appealed for discipline, while student volunteers repeatedly asked participants to avoid violence. Organisers said hundreds of volunteers had been deployed to keep the demonstration peaceful and identify troublemakers.
Why Are JPSC-JSSC Aspirants Still Protesting?
Sunday’s sixth round of talks did move the dispute forward, but not far enough to stop Monday’s march. According to The New Indian Express, the government agreed to cancel the 14th JPSC preliminary test. Ministers also said around 98 per cent of students’ demands had been accepted.
The remaining dispute is politically and legally tougher. Protest leaders want the JSSC-CGL examination cancelled and continue to demand a CBI investigation into alleged irregularities. The government says it cannot unilaterally cancel the JSSC-CGL process because of court-linked directions, but has offered a retired-judge-led inquiry and judicial monitoring.

The state has announced a broader package instead of accepting every demand exactly as framed by protesters. The CID is already investigating alleged irregularities, while the Enforcement Directorate has registered an ECIR to examine suspected financial transactions connected with the JPSC case. A fast-track court and chargesheets within 90 days have also been proposed.
Three serving JPSC members, Dr Ajita Bhattacharya, Dr Anima Hansda and Dr Jamal Ahmed, have resigned amid the controversy and CID scrutiny. Nineteen people had been arrested in connection with alleged JPSC irregularities by Sunday. The government has also discussed an expert committee involving institutions such as IITs, IIMs, XLRI and ISM to recommend recruitment reforms.

The government has publicly left room for judicial monitoring and further reforms, while protest leaders say the movement will continue until the CBI and JSSC-CGL demands are addressed.
Politics is also moving alongside the student agitation. BJP leaders, including Leader of Opposition Babulal Marandi and state president Aditya Sahu, were detained during a separate protest near the Chief Minister’s residence. Meanwhile, ruling alliance leaders have accused the BJP of trying to politicise the agitation.
For aspirants, however, the fight remains centred on recruitment credibility, disputed examinations and what happens to pending appointments. With the Assembly in session and protesters already reaching police barricades, the next government response could decide whether the agitation begins to cool or spreads further across Jharkhand.
